I am looking to purchase a really fast 50mm normal lens, and an 85 or 100mm for portraiture.

I've only ever used Pentax, where the only distinction is whether it's screw mount or bayonet. Canon seems to be a bit more complicated.

How do I know which lenses will fit? This is driving me crazy.... FD this, FL that, and I don't know the difference.

I prefer being able to use manual focus. The reason I like using the Canon Elan is because of the bright viewfinder and the easy focusing. Love the camera.

Thanks for your help, and I apologize if there is redundancy with this thread from the past. I tried for ten minutes to find this info previously posted here on APUG without success. It's all the time I have for now.

Thanks,

- Thomas

You need the EF line of lenses.
MF is not as perfect as with a dedicated MF camera system but doable.

If you want a bright viewfinder on a quite capable camera with fast lenses and all for cheap, consider the Minolta XD-7 aka XD-11.

FD lenses will not fit the EOS mount cameras. The "L" lenses are their professional line and they always have a red line around the barrel at the front of the lens.

Probably your best bet would be to go to KEH's website and choose Canon Auto Focus cameras and browse the lenses there. All of the ones listed there will fit your Elan 7e

Thanks fellas! I appreciate it.

Thomas - I use that camera frequently. The two lenses I could not do without are the 50mm f1.8 (dirt cheap, OK build, great image quality) and the 85mm f1.8 (best lens I've ever used...and reasonably priced!). Sadly, Travis is right: the older manual lenses won't fit. The good news is that adapters are available to use other older lenses like OM and Pentax screw mount.
