Canon Canonet Review

40 years late, I know...but a couple of weeks ago I bought a very pristine condition Canon Canonet.

Good review.

I got hold of my Dads Canonet and got it working again. Just needed to wind and fire a few times and hey presto all working again.

I really need to run a film through it to make sure it is ok, did pick on you say it slightly over exposes, so will bear that in mind.

Love the Canonet. I managed to snag a black one and use it frequently. Stupidly, I sold the perfectly working chrome version I had.

Even though I´ve got a Canonet QL17 GIII in great condition (Saddle Tan leathered), I would totally get a black one if I could. Yours seems to be in good condition
Some people completely go with the steel/silver look on rangefinders, but I think black looks better somehow.

They look a bit better, but take it from me, they all shoot great photos, chrome or enamel. I like the black, but if I just had the chrome, I'd have been fine. These black one are commanding ridiculous prices these days, even in the bad economy. Happily, I got this one that was made in Japan, not Taiwan.

OK, very nice, but I reckon I got a better bargain than this: two Olympus 35 Trips (admittedly, zone-focusing, not rangefinders, but sharp as a tack all the same) at Aus$8-00 each: both in excellent cosmetic condition and everything (including the spot-on Selenium meters) in perfect working order.

Happily, I got this one that was made in Japan, not Taiwan.

Why's that?

Mine is from Taiwan, and I dont know about the 'better' Japanese versions but I cant discover any flaws on my Taiwanese version.

Products that are Japanese have for a long time been considered better made than Chinese and Taiwanes

I found a Bell & Howell branded Canonet 19 in a thrift store. I think I bought it along with several point and shoots for $4. After getting used to the film advance on the bottom, I love this camera. I'd say it's my favorite 35mm, except I'd be afraid my Nikon F would hear and beat me up. I'll say it's my favorite rangefinder.

A good review, the only thing that caught my eye was the price. Here in Japan you can find a Canonet any day of the week for $5 to $10. I've thought of buying them all up and reselling them on Ebay (where they seem to sell for more). The most expensive Canonet I've seen was an incredibly worn black model which was priced at 8000 yen. For some reason, in Japan, cameras which show heavy wear seem to cost more than ones which look unused. I was tempted to get the black Canonet simply for the novelty of it, but I found a minty black Canon VT for the same price, and the VT can use my Leica screw-mount lenses. After reading your review, I may go back and pick up a Canonet.
