Pretty useless. How about some large format lenses.

yep, with the introduction of the new RF mount, canon would do well to put resource into getting their lens lineup for that mount in order. They already have a very comprehensive lineup of lenses spanning EF, EF-S, and EF-M, so RF is where they should be hitting it.

all that being said, the new RF lenses that they have released is optically speaking, eye watering level good. Top of the line.

I think developing more lenses for a camera with no pro models is a shame.

I think developing more lenses for a camera with no pro models is a shame.

“Pro” models are coming. You could also look at it the other way, it’d be a shame to develop a pro body and have no native glass. Sure, you could adapt their native pro EF glass, but lots of pros would not go for that either.

the EOS R (and RP) aren’t bad cameras, despite what you’ve heard on the internet about them from reviewers. The R is basically a smaller version of the 5D MIV with various concessions made for the fact that it’s a significantly smaller body. The RP is an even smaller version of the 6D MII.

I’ve owned and used the R and currently own and use the RP. Neither was my primary body for professional work, but that was only because I already have a solid body (and backup) for paid work.

I know this thread is about the lenses, but lots of pros have been using the R and RP for paid work. Just because it doesn’t fit your particular needs doesn’t mean it’s not pro. That’d be like saying any canon camera that is not a 1DX is not a pro body. Not every type of work needs that. If you’re a studio shooter, for example, you don’t need two card slots as you’re very likely tethering. Nor do you need super high frame rates. On the other hand, if you’re in the Middle East covering the war of the moment, then two card slots is a must have.

All that being said, canon has released a grand total of two bodies (3 if you count the Astro version of the R) for the mount and has indicated that more are on the way, so 2020 and 2021 will see quite a bit of movement on that front. They just dropped the 1DX MIII onto the market, and since they are the market segmentation kings (much to the chagrin of youtubers that want everything in a body the size of the M50 that costs $499) we’ll see RF bodies come out that address various pro needs over the next 12-24 months.

Also, let’s not forget that Canon has been in the mirrorless market for a lot longer than many people give them credit for. While lots of people don’t consider their EOS M line to be pro level, they’ve been pretty consistently spitting out some solid EF-M mount bodies for years now. Those are some seriously small bodies and pack a ridiculous amount of functionality. I have the M5 and it’s frankly a dream to use. It’s totally loaded with knobs and dials and gives all the control you could possibly want in a body that is actually borderline too small. Paired with their little EF-M pancake prime, it’s a near perfect combination of size and functionality that you can take pretty much everywhere.

The icing on the cake is that the RP uses the same batteries and card slot so you can go full frame mirrorless without a huge layout in other areas if you want to.

Canon knows exactly what they’re doing.

Non-SLR (mirrorless) cameras such as Canon/Nikon/Pentax are easily and cheaply adapted ( eg with Fotrio adapters) to all sorts of lenses. While not all of them will have full setting functionality, that's not often necessary if you use auto-ISO settings.

The near-term winner will probably be Pentax becaise it provides weather seals and because it stabilizes in body rather than needing lens stabilization.

The old distinction between "pro" and other models is fading into history.

While we are at it, back in 1987 Canon launched the EF mount and had the EOS 650 as a body for the lenses. This wasn't considered a pro body, was it? The EOS 1 came in 1989.
