Just picked up a Canon 100mm f3.5 LTM lens -- the version that's silver and black. The filter size is I think 34mm. Will a modern 34mm filter work or is there some different thread pitch for the vintage lenses?

I have no hint that there were 34mm filter threads with other than 0.5mm pitch.

But there are thread pitch gauges for a few dollars at the better hardware store. I assume typically combining a metrical and a UNC range. Such gauge will come handy from time to time, as one can check the pitch and the flank form.

I have an email into Filterfind and will report back. He has lots of vintage filters, series adapters, hoods etc.

I have never come across a filter thread that wasn't standard from '50s forward. Exceptions would be Series adapters or lenses that don't have filter threads (but they may have threads for retaining rings). I usually find a Google search of the particular lens model will turn up the filter thread specification somewhere in the ether.
