Hi,

Plan on spending a week around Dorset and Cornwall in a weeks time just to take photographs. I'll be getting the boat from Ireland to Fishguard in Wales and driving down.

Can you recommend places that I should see and visit? Any recommended coastal walks? Any particular parts of Dartmoor I should visit etc

Thanks for any info at all, hopefully the weather is nice for the week

Regards
Martin

You wont do bad anywhere on the Cornish coast Martin, although personally I find the further west you go the more dramatic the scenery gets. The north coast gets the best evening light and few of my favourite places would be - Godrevy lighthouse at Gwithian (Nr St Ives), Porth Nanven (St Just in Penwith), Sennen cove and Lands End which has spectacular cliffs.
On the south coast - The Lizard, Mounts Bay, Newlyn/Penzance, St Michaels Mount.
Not sure what it'll be like in a weeks time but lately alot of these places have been rammed with tourists. Porth Nanven will probably be the quietest as it's the most difficult to find.

Martin,
Dartmoor: Wistman's Wood, Haytor Quarries, Fingle Bridge, Drewsteignton and don't miss the Warren Inn for a pint and a bite! Cornwall: Bill has given you some good locations but I would include South Wheel Frances (minining buildings) and Kynance Cove in particular on the Lizard. But more or less anywhere around the Cornish coast will be productive. If you want a meet up while you are in west Cornwall - let me know.

Neil.

Hello Martin, I can certainly second Neil's choice of Dartmoor, since it's on my 'patch'. Walks along the river Teign from Fingle and pass Castle Drogo is always a good spot. There is also a good pint to be had at the Fingle Bridge Inn ( just mention my name...)

Just noticed you mentioned Dorset as well: Portland Bill - allow a day here at least. Also Durdle Door and Kimmer Ridge are well worth a look but there will be loads of tripod holes

Guys thanks all for the information, its much appreciated. Lots of locations there for me to start finding on the maps.

The Fingle Bridge Inn will be added to the list also:smile:

Neil, I'll try not to trip over any of the tripod holes:smile:

Thanks again

Thanks again all. By the looks of things I should have planned to go over for two weeks instead of one week as there is so many places to visit

"St Austell Brewery" I think it would be rude not to visit:smile:

Cheers all

It will be a tight push to get all that in within a week and the brewery as well  BTW why are you missing out north Devon and Exmoor ? Depending on your route you could have a look on your way back ;-)

Dartmoor, Exmoor - any of the places mentioned by Neil, Bill and Keith. The Rame peninsula and Portwrinkle are also personal favourites. I like the Inn at Hexworthy and the river/Tor close by...

Thanks again all, "north Devon and Exmoor" I will try to pass through

The problem is that I only have the week so im not going to be able to see everything unfortunately. Sounds like I need to plan a second visit

Fingers crossed the weather will be better than here in Ireland

I don't want to worry you but the weather in the West Country is very similar to that in Ireland :surprised: Mind it makes for some lovely clouds :D

You didn't mention the Pasties Neil :D

Barry, good point

Martin,
Don't buy your pasties until you reach Cornwall otherwise you won't get real ones. Better still if washed down with a couple of pints of Doom Bar at Botallack :D

But Neil - If he doesn't visit Hayle for the pasties he will have missed a great moment in life... Better still - send him a map to go there first and then suggest he washes it all down with Doom Bar at Botallack.

Surely a little photo jaunt doesn't get any better than that! But make sure Delphine is not waiting in the wings! I have it on good authority that she might be a little partial to a little pastie or two...

Hi All,

Got to spend 5 days down the south west. Had a good time, tried Cornish Pasties for the first time too, waited till I was in Cornwall, very nice indeed:smile:

Got to see the following from what you suggested:

Dartmoor-Exmoor
St Michaels Mount
Haytor Tor
Fingle Bridge
Warren Inn for a pint and a bite: Had a great steak:smile:
Castle Drogo
St Austell Brewery (unfortunately they were full for so did not get to see around the brewery, they had nice beer though)
Rame peninsula
Portwrinkle

Thanks again all, just have to dev all the film now.
