The youtube videos on this can be very helpful. Probably learn more of the basics that way, and the books might give you the details, if needed.

Another thing to keep in mind is that not all photography books have accurate information in them; sometimes they are overly reliant on the author's personal approach, knowledge and understanding, or lack thereof.

Ilford's YouTube channel has a lot of introductory videos on developing film and printing.

Agreed: Henry Horenstein. His Basics book, and later on, his Beyond Basics are excellent resources for the novice. Far better than searching the web for multiple, random resources. The web is chock full of misinformation.

The Photographer's Master Printing Course by Tim Rudman. Provides all the info you need, and a whole lot of inspiration to boot..

"Basic Black & White Photography" ( I think)
Author: Henry Horenstein.
+1
( but the title is : Black and White Photography: A Basic Manual )

great book great teacher!

there is even a section at the end of the book that shows "mistakes"
and what they were caused by...

The Horenstein book is very good, as is David Vestal's book "The Craft of Photography".
I have many of the Tim Rudman and Eddie Ephraums books also, but they tend to focus on more advanced darkroom techniques. I think a good solid knowledge of the basics is essential. Learn how to get consistent results with just a few common films, chemicals & papers before experimenting with other techniques.
I agree that there are endless resources available on the internet today. When I was learning it was just a book from the library or articles from Photo magazines.
