The Horenstein book is very good, as is David Vestal's book "The Craft of Photography".
I have many of the Tim Rudman and Eddie Ephraums books also, but they tend to focus on more advanced darkroom techniques. I think a good solid knowledge of the basics is essential. Learn how to get consistent results with just a few common films, chemicals & papers before experimenting with other techniques.
I agree that there are endless resources available on the internet today. When I was learning it was just a book from the library or articles from Photo magazines.
