Can the focusing screen in the Pentax K1000 be removed fairly easily?

I just got a Pentax K1000 from garage sale. It's in good shape but the mirror foam went bad and I believe some of it some how got above the focusing screen and is in between the focusing screen and the pentaprism. Is there any way to clean it off short of removing the top cover which is quite involved?

As far as I know the top plate has to come off. It has been a long time but as I remember the viewfinder is held in place with a couple springs and a couple of screws.

Hello,
the K 1000 is in principle a Spotmatic F with bayonet and the SP F is nearly identical inside with the Spotmatic. So if you'll find a repair manual for any of these models, it will help you with the K 1000 too. Afaik you may have to remove the galvanometer and the lightmeter/film speed potentiometer before you can remove the prism which is secured by 4 screws and 2 springs. The focussing screen can be adjusted from inside the mirror box by screws (3 ?) and could be changed by a Pentax service against a split image type.
