Can I use SS reels in Paterson tanks?

I might have to break down and buy stainless steel reels to optimize my stand development results.

Can I use my Patterson Super System 4 plastic tanks and stainless steel reels? I probably will be getting these from B&H (reportedly Hewes reels, rebranded)

Also, how would you load the reels as it is not obvious compared to the plastic reels I use now.

No because the centre column is used as the light seal in Paterson tanks, and stainless steel reels are smaller diameter and are used column less.

There's no particular advantages using Stainless steel reels anyway unless working commercially with deep tanks & baskets.

Sorry, but how can a reel "optimise" the results. What kind of problems do you have with stand development? Chances are that whatever problems you have are caused by stand developments itself, not your reels.

There are Hewes reels that are made for Paterson tanks, with a bigger diameter to fit the column. If you can compromise and deviate a little from the stand development regimen, and do minimal agitation instead, you don't need to buy those expensive reels.

There is! When using 120 film and the camera or the film holder (as the Linhof Rapid Rollex) is placing the negative very close to the edge of the film, a plastic reel will touch the edge of the image during development and the friction causes increased density - very anoying if you want to print the full negative.

Yes you can. I had exactly the same problem as j-fr only in 35mm when using Diafine. They are also available here in the UK:
