All my negatives and slides are in print file archival pages. If i put them in a plywood box is there anything in the wood that will damage my photos over time?

Wood will off gas acid and other harmful chemicals, not good for archival storage.

I briefly wondered whether this thread came from the same root idea as this one: https://www.photrio.com/forum/threads/after-death-what-shall-happen-to-our-photos.209312/
:whistling:

no I came up with this a few minutes ago when I was organizing my slides and negatives. I had them in 3 ring binders but they were taking up so much space. Maybe that was the best way though. I could hang them in the file metal cabinet because I also have hangers for file folders. I thought about a fire proof file cabinet also. what to do.

I use plastic archival photo boxes with PrintFile pages.

Seal your plywood box with water-based polyurethane.

not good enough for the next atomic assault or theft. How about a safe deposit box at the bank?

Before you cut the film strips to fit the PrintFIles, consider the negative holders you'll use if you plan to scan, so they match in length and fit the holder.

All the negatives have been cut years and decades ago and have long since been put in the clear plastic printfile pages. As far as negative holders, i use a piece of anti newton ring glass and scan on an epson flat bed scanner so i dont use the holder

Before that some of the negatives were just rolled up in one strip and put in film cannisters. Perfectly preserved since the late 1950s. Id also like to get a small light table so i can preview the negs and slides for scanning and printing.

I use Kaiser Slimlite Plano. They come in different sizes.

oh that sounds good do you have a brand or part number link or anything? Im using PrintFile pages also.

I do not remember who made the plastic box, but it was a company that made binders for PrintFile like products. I hope that helps.

Thanks for the advice.
This one in my dreams.

I have a smaller cheaper model that you can see one 4x5 but not a lot of slide.

I use opaque plastic boxes bought from hardware stores.

I love wood aesthetically but it warps, holds moisture, has more opportunities for insect intrusion, etc. not to mention it contains acids/gases and plywood also contains glue. If you seal it the seal will eventually fail. If you put metal hinges/nails/screws on it they will eventually corrode.

I still have boxes I bought like these that I bought from a place in Rochester NY, that I can't remember the name.

It sounds like you're talking about Light Impressions. They closed their retail store in Rochester years ago but still do online sales of framing, display & archival photo products, plus art supplies...

Yes, Light Impressions. My wife worked there for a while, many years before we met. 😊
