Greetings to everyone who loves the darkroom! My name is Thom Harrop and I was the editor of Camera & Darkroom magazine. I was excited to find this group and hope to be able to spend time contributing and getting to know the members.

Please feel free to email me anytime if you have a question or would just like to say hi.

Thom Welcome and goodluck with the group it
is alot of fun here. enjoy

I was looking for something else in the attic storeroom the other day, and came across a stack of old Camera & Darkroom magazines. My wife came up to get me after two hours - and I'd barely got settled in.

You are more than welcome, since your magazine is also sorely missed. Even in Norway.

Like Ole, I still enjoy looking through my stack of Camera and Darkroom issues.
Enjoy the site!

Thom ...

I recognized the name immediately. I am one of those who misses - sorely - Camera and Darkroom. Of all the magazines that have come and gone, since, I think the one most remembered and still thought of - highly - is C&D... without question.

A year or two ago, I survived a flood (12" of rain within 14 hours) and all my files of C&D were soaked. I had lines all over my cellar, with issues of C&D drying on them. I lost a lot of photographic paper, materials, my enlarger baseboard went under water and had to be replaced, my Olympus OM-4 with five lenses and sundry accessories ... all together that flood cost well over $3,000. I managed to save what I considered to be the MOST important of all - the dried issues of C&D.

What I considered to be of greatest interest was the in-depth interviews of "significant" photographers ... discovering their thought processes and "modus operandi"; their approaches to their work... There was an extraordinary wealth of information in that magazine.

You may have noticed that Aggie is in the process of starting a new magazine -- Many of us had suggested the name "Camera and Darkroom" or some sort of "progression from there - "C&D II".

It is great to hear from you. This may be a little late ... some of us had the wind knocked out of us when we received that last issue and discovered that it was the last issue... but you did a WONDERFUL job. I don't think you were still editor when C&D ended .. were you? I seem to remember another bright light (I have no idea of you relationship ..) Ana Jones.., Everyone there was SO great, whenever they were there.

Anway... Welcome!! At times, APUG seems to have the same "flavor" that made C&D so great ... some of the philosophical discussions remind me a LOT of A. D. Coleman - I'm still re-reading some of what he wrote, trying to figure it out.

Welcome. I mentioned the magazine in a posting only yesterday. Two of the magazines I used to look forward to were that and the UK counterpart. Sadly, both fell by the wayside.

Thom,

Welcome to Apug. I too miss the American Camera and Darkroom it was a fine magazine and is sadly missed. Thank you for your contribution to hours of happy reading and like Ed I still have the old copies.

Thom--

I subscribed to Camera & Darkroom for a number of years, and, like others who have posted here, I was sorry when it died. I learned a lot from the magazine. Fortunately, I still have the back issues filed and can consult them at any time.

I am now definitely in the shadow of giants. I literally loved Camera and Darkroom. I have several issues and, best of all, the final one. I was bewildered for months before I gave in to another pub (going, not so quietly, digital) and recently dropped it. I am looking forward to your involvement in this group.

Welcome!

Thanks for the welcome.

I don't know how to respond individually so I will answer the question about me being at C&D at the end. I was not. I saw the handwriting on the wall and bailed about a year before they closed the doors. I ended up at Outdoor Photographer for a little over a year and hated almost every minute.

I have had a couple of sort of aborted attempts at starting a new magazine but I don't have the money and the people who do are generally not nice folks. I am currently starting a blog at www.thomharrop.com/thomblog and will be posting reviews, commentary and interviews on a semi-regular basis. I hope to get back into publishing at some point but for now my college teaching keeps me a little too busy.

I look forward to getting to know you all and participating in the forum.
