Camera Bling!?

I guess it depends on who you're trying to impress. A while ago I walked into a Ritz with my Nikon F2, and the clerk practically wet his pants. He said no one ever comes in with a "classic" SLR like that. See, that's the problem--nice cameras only impress camera geeks. And the whole point of bling is to be expensive and flashy in an obvious way. Even a brand new, $30K digital Hasselblad kit isn't going to be impressive to people who don't really know what it is.

It would have to be a camera that could rival the absurdity of the Flavor Flav style clock I usually wear around my neck. How about a chrome-plated pinhole camera made out of a Quaker Oatmeal container?

How about a lightweight, yet still relatively sophisticated, piece of camera bling? That way you don't have to tire from something heavy hanging on a gold chain around your neck, yet still have that "professional" photog look. So, shitcan the "Hit" and wear a small SLR system camera - - a Pentax Auto 110!! If is is equipped with the zoom lens, score extra points.

2) A Speed or Crown Graphic with a large flash attachment and flash bulb. Fire the flash at people as the get out of a car or exit a building.
3) An Ariflex movie camera with a three lens turret.
4) A stereo camera.

While not 35mm, my Pentax 6x7 gets LOTS of (worried? curious?) stares.

For a 35mm camera, the Rolleiflex 3003 is the most noticed, with some occasional attention, maybe because of its odd shape.

Contrary to popular belief, Leicas are useless for attracting attention... ;-)

my personal choice would be either one of these gold Hasselblad or Mamiya RB67 anniversary editions,
or, to follow Steve´s suggestion, 3 Rollei TLRs, tele, wide and normal version in the gold-plated anniversary edition, combined with some golden necklace, so it would look like the style of Mr. T ;-)

On the other formats:
A hassie, of course.
A Rolleiflex with 2.8 lens, recovered in bright red skin.
On the other side. The "cheap" tachihara 4x5 camera, cheap compared to other LF cameras but with nice cherrywood and brass finish. Seems that has to call attention. Maybe if you stay in the middle of a pedestrian streen with a tripond and the camera, more than one will shoot you with cellphones.

Bling is a ghetto culture term for flashy jewelry worn by rappers. A lot of the drug dealers and pimps in my neighborhood wear a lot of bling to show off their wealth. Personally if I could afford such jewelry, I wouldn't live in the area of town I live in, but I grew up middle class, so my outlook is different.

As for what camera, I used to see doctors and lawyers wearing Leicas as jewlery all the time when I lived in Santa Fe, but that's rare here in Indiana even in wealthy communities. People here are too practical minded for that.

I think the big handle flashes really bling up any camera.. especially the retro bulb types.

If you dont want to wear your expensive camera as bling.. how bout getting some 'costume bling' like those fake 'olympia' cameras?

Those gold M6s are tough to beat...but if I could gold plate my Argus C33 and wrap it in red snakeskin, it would really be an eyegrabber!
