Calumet photo vanishes in the US

That's where I normally go actually, and it's usually my favorite place in the world (I say usually because sometimes there's a guy who works there who eyeballs me like I'm trying to steal something). I like to try different places every so often though.

That reminds me...I should have some processed Ektar to pick up from Central any day now.

What does Central charge for C41 or E6 processing? I'm thinking about using them when I get back to the states.

I'm an offset printer. I make wagon wheels and buggy whips every time I step up to the Hamada. It's just a struggle to keep head above water now. Back in the 80's there were jobs everywhere, plucked practically out of thin air. Not any more.

I guess that's why the store I visited near the flat iron a month or so ago was so barren. Last time I purchased something from
them was a used canon vit off ebay, the counter was broken but customer service at calumet was great and refunded me a partial payment instead of hassling with a return.

You know I thought something was up when last week I noticed 20+ units of Calumet 750ws strobes on sale at Roberts Camera on ebay. Considering the calumet strobes are rebranded bowens made strictly for calumet, I thought it was odd a different camera company would have such a large stock. Unless someone was going out of business, they range from beat up to fairly used, so I'm assuming they came from Calumet's rentals department. Pretty good prices for 750 monoblocs. If I didn't blow a few hundred last month on new film I'd jump on one of these.

I don't understand why Calumet's European operations haven't been effected .

Might be a separately owned company, just using the brand name "Calumet" under licence. Similar to franchises, and, of course, the recent situation where the Swiss "Ilford" operation went into difficulties, but was completely unconnected to our own, much-loved, Harman Technology "Ilford" company.

A search on the UK government public register of companies (companieshouse.gov.uk ) can provide a lot of information for anyone interested, for a nominal fee.

Rather sad; I used to use these guys for hire equipment when I would fly to the US for photoshoots. Their selection was pretty good and the bonus for me, was that they happily delivered and collected the gear - I didn't need to try and find the place.

Have used Calumet in the UK many times as well, only thing was it was more complicated buying from them as their "International" sales were expected to go through the US.

This is a shame for photography in general, at least here in the Washington DC area. I've occasionally dropped into the Penn Camera shop (owned by Calumet) over by Tysons Corner; it used to be that Penn would take trades and so have some used gear for sale, but that vanished in large part when Calumet took over and focused nearly entirely on digital. Their supplies of chemistry dropped to near nothing, so I no longer had much interest in going in. But they did have items that could be used by either analog or digital photographers: carry bags, backgrounds, lighting, etc. What's kind of odd is that the Metro has been extended to go through Tysons Corner and one of the stops is directly in front of Penn Camera there, so if it were still in business when the Metro line opens it would have stood a good chance of increased foot traffic. I can't now think of many other camera stores in the area I'll be visiting.

I remember asking about the used equipment question (they were suspending all trades for used gear for a while) when Calumet first took over Penn and was given some song and dance about regulations, which at the time sounded suspicious. Now I wonder if their financial situation was already a cause of that problem.

Well when Jacobs folded in the UK the next week they reopened some of the stores with skeleton staffs selling the stock at fire sale/clearance prices.

AFAIK, Kodak is frankly indifferent to the situation regarding camera stores in Rochester. Rowe Photo is all digital now.

Actually the museum store has a film selection that puts many "pro" stores to shame. Add that to free parking, and a nice cafe - who could want more.
I am sure if more students used that as a resource for supplied they would carry whatever those students needed...
