Caffinol out, Red Wine In

My Caffenol developed negatives didn't have a brown stain. They looked just like 'normally' developed negatives to me.

The pre-video text and then the video had me confused as to whether it was talking about film or paper developing. Annoyingly the word film was used when I think he meant paper. Anyway it was paper he was referring to although he seemed to hint that wine can develop film as well.

Anyway it seems as if you use undiluted wine and in the U.K. there isn't any wine available at dirt cheap prices so unless the half litre of wine does a lot of prints then it certainly wouldn't be cheap to do.

Pity that the print wasn't shown in normal light to see what the tone effect was and I wonder how long the tone lasts?

He seemed to be using FB paper based on his drier but I assume that RC would work as well.
More questions than answers which is a pity. If the presentation had been thought out more professionally and not done in a rather off the cuff way it could have been quite good.

I have just started getting into Caffenol and there are lots of alternatives. Some are using dried sage! It seems to work very well. Others are using things like the water from boiled potatoes (with skins on), and the results were that it needed diluting a lot to get the development time (for film) UP to a usable time (ie NOT 1 min or less!).
So whilst I still use rodinol and Ilfosol, the others are interesting and DO work.
The problem I have had with all is that I need more practice and that means a lot of film and cost! lol.

i wonder what kind of vino darkroomexperimente used in his/her experiments ..
way back ... s/he did experiments with red wine and it came up blank ...
its great to see that people are enjoying themselves
as mcgyver too

my only question about using red wine is does it smell bad enough ?
that is the best part of using coffee it reeks ... the red wine ...
i guess if you drank the rest of the bottle it wouldn't mater how bad it smelled
but you might forget to take the film out of the developer !

Thanks so much for this! My photo 2 kids have been developing in caffenol this week..... they are going to love seeing this video (too bad I'd probably get fired for bringing wine on campus or we would try wineol as well!)

That is all too often the case for me.

Novel idea. I have found developing prints does not need coffee present. I guess any Liquid with staining ability could produce a print when washing soda and vit C are added. My results with film have been different to paper. Need coffee to get good contrast.

I think I will give parsley or grass a go by boiling a pot up to extract the colour. Should get green prints.?
