While ordering chemicals to make Caffenol-C-M, I wondered about the coffee. Commonly, the cheapest instant coffee crystals are used. Then, of course, I wondered just where the cheapest might be found.

I went to Sam's Club and they have a very large bottle of Folgers Instant Coffee Crystals, probably intended for the food service trade, as 16 ounces for $9.38. That size is not listed in lists of retail packaging sizes, so hit up you local big discount club store.

I recommend you get smaller sized amounts of coffee from an assortment of manufacturers/brands. And see if you do really like the look of caffenol development before you get a crate of a single brand to use. Because you might be drinking bad coffee for awhile if you decide not to use caffenol after your tests.

Not me! I wouldn't touch instant coffee, of any kind. Even the best of the best is, well...

As far as I'm concerned, all coffee is bad coffee. I'm happy developing a film in it but I'm not going to drink it.

Maybe chugging a couple cups of Dektol in the morning would work just as well??

It's worth a shot, and every self-respecting black and white photographer uses Dektol to print :D

hey Pgeobc
i agree with newt ....
i used to always see the giant container of folgers at sam's but
but never bought it ... and before i bought the motherlode, i bought chepo-instant jars
from a grocery store ... i'm not sure if you have other sources of rot-gut near you, but before you buy a few pounds
of an "unknown" i'd check out smaller quantities of different brands
first ... i that said, i bought a few pounds of GREEN BEANS from a local roaster to try out ...
before i bought the 65-70lbs of it

caffenol is a blast, have fun !

I've had good luck with a really rot-gut coffee from our local Wal-Mart. Nescafé Clásico. For $1.12 you can get 8 packets each 2g for a total of 16g of coffee. Pre-measured! It is also available in a large jar for about $6. Really nasty coffee. I also got Pampa Instant Coffee for $1.00 PER jar, 80g. Just about the same in smell and appearance. This stuff is so strong that it actually stains a coffee cup. Just go for the "import" stuff, the stronger the better. Just don't drink this unless you don't want to get any sleep!

Steve.

I'm content with about three cups a year. The taste of coffee sadly doesn't live up to the smell (though a dollop of brandy in it helps!) My nemesis is red wine. Why anyone would drink something that tastes like brake fluid is beyond me!! I could die of thirst in a sea of the stuff!
