Cable Release !!!

Anyone know of a good long lasting cable release. I bought a nice german made one a while ago, maybe shot about 6 rolls at night with it and its broken already, the one I bought before that lasted maybe 2 rolls. Its frustrating when your out shooting and get into a subject and accesories break. Paid $ 20.00 for that piece of junk. After a while when I wanted to take say a 2 minute exposure it would lock ok but wasnt reaching the shutter release mechanism

My favorite and the nicest cable releases that I have ever used are the Linhof. I personally use the 13.5". Badger Graphics sells these heavy duty 21" Linhof cable releases for $26.95.

Nikon offers a cloth cable release called the ar-3 (it's short at 12") that was able to endure the abuse of thousands of exposures used on copy cameras that I once worked with...never did see one croak. Oh yeah, it's under 20 bucks.

I have also had very good luck with the air activated shutter releases, the ball type.

Quality of pneumatic releases varies widely. Plastic cylinders and pistons seem less reliable than metal.

I'll second the Nikon AR-3. I've not used the other brands mentioned, however. My Nikon has lasted for several years without any visible signs of wear. I'm very happy with it.

Nikon Ar-3, Minolta and Canon were all high quality releases. Sometimes you can find a used one, more frequently not.
Horseman also has a nice HD release about 18" long.

I prefer Linhof releases. They are high quality (work very well) and long lasting. I purchased half a dozen when I had a commercial studio and several cameras. They all still work fine after many years of use.

It might be the camera, i have a generic realese(henreys, the canadians will know what im talking about) when i droop it over the side with my konica on locked mode, it stops the exp, works fine with my sp500 though,

Three of us have already mentioned the Linhof cables. They have a vinyl covering and/or a vinyl covering over cloth (one of mine is white cloth with clear vinyl covering the other has a black vinyl covering). They are heavy duty, have a heavy duty plunger and assembly and use a screw to lock. They operate smoothly, reliably and for many many years of service.

Hi Folks.

Back in the late 60s I bought a cable release called Prontor, about 18 inches long. After many years the cable and its action got a little stiff. The clear vinyl coating got yellow, brittle, and it finally cracked. I carefully scored the brittle coating with an Exacto knife and peeled it away. Then I soaked the fabric with a silicone treatment. The release began working smoothly again, and I am still using it after almost 40 years. I probably could have put another clear sheath over the fabric by using clear heat shrink tubing, but I like it better without it. It is more flexible. Seems like the cable was expensive even in the 60s, but I would buy another if mine failed now, and I could find one. It fits really nicely in the fingers, and the lock is the latch button type, not the screw down type.

I wonder if anyone else has used the Prontor release. I have not known many who had them.
