Thank you or all the links. I check them out but the chemiclas I have never heard of soem of them before. What would you recommend for a developer? I am interested in a 2-bath as well as a normal developer. Right now I am using TMAX developer.

I agree with Jim about Calumet ; there is also B&h and Adorama if you are looking for comerical prepared developers. THe Photoformualry has kits as well .
B&H and Adorama are about the same price and I find working with Adorama more friendly, but that is my experience. The others are a bit higher in cost.

Do you want one or two developers for all film types, or specific developers for specific films? Knowing that will be more helpful for making suggestions. ALso, do you want to mix from scatch, or rather use liquid?

I am thinking of mixing from scratch as I heard that they do not ship certain liquid developers. Liquid is nice though. As far as films I am now using Acros 100, Delta 400, 3200 films. I would like to go with one or two developers for all film types to keep thing consistent. I also world like to get a 2-bath developer for negatives that are a little tricky and I want to hold the highlight with more detail in the shadows. I have used D-76 in the past and currently TMAX. I will also shoot TMAX film from time to time. I am now trying to find a film I like and so far it is the delta and acros. I do not like TMAX that much but that is all I used to shoot.

I also think non liquid will have a longer shelf life as I only have to mix what I need for that run. With liquid that I use now I have to mix the whole bottle.

Anyway any suggestion / recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

I did not try all the films you cite, but my main developer for films is based in Patrick Gainer's work using phenidone and vitamin C (a Xtol family clone).
Some of his formulas last a very looong time.
Same for paper.

The only point I disagree with Patrick is that I feel some sulfite helps (I'm a 35mm only shooter, so grain is important for me).

Sandy King is running some tests, also.

The most useful chemical you can buy is sodium sulfite...

For developers: (Metol), phenidone, hydroquinone. Pyrocatechol or pyrogallol if you want to go the staining way. Glycine if you wish to use FX-2 or Ansco 130. Amidol if you're wealthy. Avoid metol if you're allergic or think you might become allergic.

Some alkalis are useful: Potassium carbonate, sodium metaborate. The rest is "supermarket stuff": Lye, borax, etc. You can make sodium metaborate from these, so scratch that off the list. You can use sodium carbonate instead of potassium carbonate in 99% of all recipes, so scratch that too.

Stop bath to me is about 12 grams of citric acid in one liter of water. The pH is quite a bit higher than with acetic acid, lifetime is about three times as long, cost is negligible: Yet another supermarket chemical.

For fix I use sodium thiosulfate, ammonium chloride, sodium bicarbonate or sodium metaborate, and sodium sulfite. If you want it acidic you need sodium bisulfite and acetic acid.

Adding to Ole's:
Sodium carbonate can be purchased at pool supplies stores as pH+ or equivalent.
To prepare long lasting solutions one needs very pure alcohol (for PQ film/paper devs) or propylene glycol or TEA (for P-ascorbic devs).
And, of course, ascorbic acid is vitamin C (pure, powdered, not tablets) also sold at health stores.

i have head this many times, but have never tried using hypo from a pool company. Has anyone ever done this for themselves, or is this one of those suggestion that makes the rounds? Just curious and a littler nervous about really doing this.

Ann, this is what I use for azo (f/b paper). I forget what they called it in pool lingo (shocker perhaps?), but the msds shows sodium thiosulfate as the only ingredient. Michael & Paula's site mentions it, which is were I got the idea. It is in granular form and works well with the "two bath" version of fixing. I think I paid $35 (US) for a 25 pound bucket.

Interesting, in terms of pool use, what does it do?

I had a pleasant surprise out shopping tonight. We were in a fairly new store to the area, Trader Joes, and found they stocked pure acorbic acid powder in the vitamin section. Needless to say I bought a bottle of it to try out. I'm glad so many folks have posted ascorbic developer formulas in the forums, makes it easy to play!

Sad to say. Just click on your link. They had a fair selection of chemicals and other lab stuff at very good prices. I patronized them for a dozen years when I lived in LA and by mail after that. Old Ira passed away and the store shut down. People just aren't interested in hands on science of any kind. They would just rather buy stuff already made and running.

One of the great things about California and a few blessed locations. When I moved back to CO, I really missed it, and still do. Last time I was in CA I bought $200 worth of food and beverage at TJ's.
