Burke and James lens board seizes

I am trying to find out the seize for the lens boards on a 5X7 B&J (grey )

Hey Gustavo,

I have a few uncut originals at home . I don't have all the dimensions with me right now but, the main dimension is 5-1/4 inches square. Let me know if you need more details.

My 8x10 Korona had a B&J lensboard in it when I bought it. It was 6x6inches with a thin 1/4 in flange cut into it, thinner than the Korona needed. The picture shows the relative dimensions, the Korona board was 3/8ths inch thick. I don't know if the 5x7 board is any smaller but bet that the flange is pretty much the same.

Can't speak for the 5x7's, but I know the 4x5's came with different lensboards. Mine's 5-1/4" square, but I remember hearing of two other sizes for 4x5's.

Maybe the model makes a difference?

They are 100mm square on my B and J 5 x 7 monorail....just a bit shy of 4 inches...

My grey 5x7 B&J flatbed uses 5.25 lensboards. My 5x7 B&J Saturn monorail uses 4" lensboards.

Upon reading Jim's post i.e. Saturn, I rechecked my B and J and it is an Orbit...it is monorail and is a 100 mm (4 inch board) so there must have been a series of cameras with planetary names?

The actual* dimensions of the B&J lens boards for the commercial view cameras shown above are as follows...

overall:
5-3/16" W, 5-3/16" H, 3/8" T

the lens board is shaped like two boxes stacked one on top of the other.

The big box is:
5-3/16" W, 5-3/16" H, 3/16" T

the little box is:
4-3/4" W, 4-3/4" H, 3/16" T




the bottom edge of the big box has a slight bevel in it - to make it easier to fit in the front of the camera.

Does this make any sense at all?



* These are the actual dimensions that I measured. The nominal dimensions, printed on the OEM box are 5-1/4inches by 5-1/4inches.

Dave, I don't know much about the B&J line but, they seem to me to have been a little casual about their names. From what I've been able to gleen from on line sources, their monorail line appears to have been comprised of the following camera names: Orbit, Saturn and Grover (monorail is hexagonal in cross section).

Mr Galli has some old B&J catalogs. Perhaps, he can elaborate.
