Hello -
I have inherited several boxes of Dektol in the the 5-gallon size. I'd appreciate any quick-and-dirty suggestions on how to break these down so I can mix up 1 gallon at a time and to share with students and fellow darkroom workers. I don't have a good scale available.

This is my first post. Many thanks in advance for your help - Roy

It's best to dissolve a pack into 5 gal water and then split. If you want to split the dry powder, you would need to mix the powder very thoroughly and then divide the chemicals. There is a special kind of industrial mixer for dry chemical mixtures. Otherwise, the divided portions may not be even.

Mix the 5 gal stock and place in 2 ltr soda bottles with all air removed. It will keep several weeks if left air tight. Just mix with water 1:2 to 1:4 for working strength. Don't try to divide the powder.

Thanks for your suggestions, most helpful. I hadn't thought about dry chemical components separating. Looking for a big bucket.... : {)} - Roy

Is not drinking water available in 5 gal collapsable containers at supermarkets? Or am I thinking about wine?
