Thought I'd try here as others may have tried the same thing–Andrew Davidhazy, an RIT professor, has plans for a lens-mounted slit-scan box here http://people.rit.edu/andpph/text-slit-scan.html. Does anyone know where I could find the electrical components needed to complete the project (the motor and rollers?) Google hasn't turned up anything that looks right.

Stepper motors are not smooth, you will need analog motor drive.
For gears, bearings etc try Stock Drive Products/sterling Instruments... http://www.sdp-si.com/
For precision gears and timing belts etc W.M. Berg... http://www.wmberg.com/
Small Parts out of Miami Lakes is now part of Amazon.

Thanks for the responses guys, I'll start there.

Andrew

clock motor maybe--from an old analog clock. They are high torque geared down and made for timing. 1 revolution per minute--you control the shutter with the roller diameter then.

Another place to look for smallish pulleys, gears, and toothed belts - Old inkjet printers. They often contain small stepper motors that can be liberated for other purposes.
