We don't have secrets, honesty IS the best policy. My hobby is my extra income as well, but never needs justification.

Ditto, except my hobbies tend to run at a complete loss (except for the psychic rewards I reap from them)

No need to be "careful". It's your mouth, not someone else's. I assume you mean your 'ol lady anyway, or your 'ol man.

How do we do it? Well, if you have to ask.....you probably wouldn't get it. But honestly, you just treat people like you would want to be treated and use common sense, something that's in real short supply these days.

When my wife married me fifty years ago she knew what a big part of who I am my photography is and she has always supported my passion, I have never lied to her about anything photographic I have ever bought and I have always made sure she and our children have never gone short of anything because of my photography.

My girl friend has always encouraged me. Years ago she won a new 32 to 300 mm AF zoom lens.

Film is like cameras, tools, darkroom gear, etc. Once you have enough of it, adding one more box of film, another camera, a new enlarging lens, an additional power tool or whatever isn't discernible from the herd. You just need to get to that point.

This.

There's so many on the shelves that even if she wanted to count, she would give up after one shelf and go do something better with her time than count cameras. Plus, she's got a few of her own and justifies them her own way, so...it's no problem.

If you can't share your enjoyment about your photographic acquisitions, there won't be nearly as much enjoyment.

It wasn't the expenditures so much as the film is starting taking up space for food...
She doesn't believe me that I actually *need* those 10 bulk rolls of HP5+ I picked up expired for $19 a box
I keep my expenditures low, but things are starting to accumulate. 2 years ago I bought a mini-fridge and promised I would never out grow it, but, um, well....

I need to justify a larger fridge to my wife. :whistling:

Since I'm the one stuck with doing the vast majority of the cooking, I also have control over the fridge and freezer. But when we moved out here to Iowa, we didn't bring the fridge from PA and we're taking the one back with us that we bought out here. So I figure that will give me some serious extra space for film and whatever else. The downside is that I haven't figured out where the extra one will fit in the PA house.

If you have room, you can pick up free or cheap refrigerators all day long on craigslist. Or if you find a free freezer, use a $100 external temp controller to set it to whatever temp you want from about 0 F on up. Of course then you might find yourself justifying an extra few bucks a month in electricity depending where you live.

Maybe I'll check craigslist then. I'm pretty good at wiring up external temp controllers, I have 3 now. 2 for the fish tanks, and one we use with a crock pot as a sort of suis vide (suevee) cooker.

Thanks for the tip!

Here are a couple of off-the-shelf ones:

buy it expired, it doesn't cost much $$

It does on eBay when they include the word 'Lomo' in the description. That's enough to double the price!
