Can anyone recommend a good camera shop in Budapest where I can buy black and white film while in the city.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Mustafa Umut Sarac,

Most of the links are no longer valid.
I am hoping to pick up 20 or so rolls of HP-5 and T-400 rather than drag them through 3 or 4 airports on the way to the city.
I have checked a few forums but they have older posts and most the shops they refer to seem to be gone now based on a google search.

Best regards,
Allen

Allen,

Can you ship film to yourself or a trusted person at the destination so the film does not go through x-ray? B&H Photo will not ship to a hotel-motel address, but others will. If I can, when I travel, I ship the film there, expose it and ship it back to develop & print it myself at home. I do B&W film. If color I would ship it back to a lab for processing.

Last year I've been in Budapest and was looking for film in the city center.

I'd been directed to this shop:
Fotolux, Károly körút 21, 1075 Budapest

They had some selection of major brands - Kodak, Fuji, Ilford. I remember I bought TMax 100 there though it was a little more expensive than in Bratislava or Vienna. Maybe there's another specialist shop outside center, but I have no further advice.

There is a great restaurant on the Buda side of the river. Check out Kacsa, which is the Hungarian word for duck. They specialize in duck. Expensive for Budapest, but moderate for the rest of Europe. The duck is better than the duck a La Tour d'Argent in Paris, and much less expensive.

Palec,
Thank you, the prices are very competitive, it is close to the hotel too. Thank you!

John,
I may ship the film back, I may process in the hotel bathroom, undecided yet. I lost a few rolls to fogging after x-ray out of Barcelona last trip to Spain so I am being extra cautions this trip.

I may process in the hotel bathroom,

Every time I plan on that the bathroom is the only one in the hotel with a skylight, no curtains, intense light across the street and 90 degree F water. My wife loves the sauna.

Last summer I visited Budapest and found an Aladdin's den of a camera shop on Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út behind and to the left of the Szent István-bazilika (google maps reference 47.50191,19.054788). There's enough second-hand equipment there to soak up a load of your time - and what looked at a quick glance like all the traditional darkroom supplies along with plenty of film. I bought an OM4Ti with the 50/1.4 lens and F280 flash for a very reasonable price....

You will love Budapest, and a caveat

I visited there in 1998. The city is remarkable in its setting for pictures. I got along with everyone there, no problems, no hassle. Everyone spoke English too as Hungarian is a very unlike language akin to a nordic language, so I'm told. I don't know your nationality but they like Americans, and they love Jimmy Carter.

I had some photographic equipment mailed to me while I lived in the south of France and the customs people really wanted to hold it for some time. I had to write them a letter, in French, and it had to be perfect or they wouldn't release my things. Customs eventually did after I wrote the a letter. Two months later I got the stuff. I would make sure of Hungary's policy by calling their consulate and finding out before you get your film should you choose to ship it somehow.

Budapest is a completely modern city in its offering, I'm certain there's a large photography culture there and I'm sure you'll find film for sale there or anything else you might need.

In your search for restaurants in the city of Buda (Pest is across the river) near the bridge you'll find a bunch of fantastic places to eat. The same is true for all the touristy, public areas. For great architecture be sure to check out the bathhouses.

Here's a photo showing Buda on your right and Pest to the left. On the hill in Pest there's a great statue and if I were there I would position myself for great light and some human interest. I considered scanning my picture of the statue but I realized that it would be better if I left it to your imagination.

Enjoy your trip,

Puma
