Probably the most important Photographic magazine in historical terms, the BJP has been published for 146 years, weekly for much of that time.

As of next month it'll become monthly. It's always been at the forefront of photography, and is highly respected by all the major manufacturers and the industry.

Unlike most other Photography magazines it doesn't have a 100% digital bias and so is worthwhile reading matter. IMHO :D

I should add I find the British Journal Photographic Almanacs an invaluable research tool, and great insight into photography's past

I subscribe and have thought for a while now that the weekly edition seems a bit out of step these days especially with updated (internet) news happening by the hour. I like the idea of a monthly edition and think their efforts should be applauded in these difficult days for publishers.

I'm now renewing my subscription which I let lapse in November, I've been reading the BJP regularly since the mid 70's, but read it occasionally before that. I agree that a monthly version will be far better, but my reasoning is skewd by my living abroad, and trying to read 20+ issues each trip back to the UK got too much :D

I must admit to having a few unopened copies still in their cellophane wrappers. One other thing - whilst I think it's a great magazine their spelling mistakes sometimes annoyed me - perhaps they'll have time to proof read a bit better now!

I've been relying on the weekly email for the free content (cheapskate!), but might be tempted by a monthly hard copy edition. Maybe you guys could keep us informed of any launch offers for subscriptions?

Thanks, Peter

BJP Re-launch; Good News.

I went to the launch party earlier this evening for the new monthly BJP and I am very glad to report that it is going to be an excellent change of format. It’s a big thick mag on far higher quality paper and has excellent reproductions. It’s focus is very much on photographers, from upcoming talent to a major interview with Don McCullin as well as the many ways we see, appreciate and work in photography today. There are several articles on publishing and self publishing, including reports on specialist magazines, (emphasising that print is far from dead), and a big article on the photographic publishers Steidl which I’m looking forward to reading. Given the changes in print media and the reliance on online information, it is a bold but a logical step. A magazine such as this has a lasting quality which emphasises how ephemeral a web based alternative can be. Having said that, they certainly plan to continue and improve their website and blog. Three cheers for Simon Bainbridge and his team for pulling it off. Not many magazines could start an editorial with; ‘For our 7774th issue, we’ve gone and done something different.’ That’s one hell of a heritage. The change in design is also good. Again from the editorial; ‘Architects and graphic designers have beautiful magazines to read, so why not professional photographers?’ Indeed why not? I think we really might have one here and am already looking forward to the April issue on landscape and location photography.
