Not at all worthy of Helmut Newton. Probably selected by some editor who wasn't even born when Henri stopped photographing, over thirty years ago. (When did I start sounding like my father?)

Actually Bresson and Newton are quite friendly, Bresson shot a portrait of Newton for Vanithy fair last year.

The issue is Newsweek, June 2 2003

From what I've read of him, Cartier-Bresson still keeps his Leica within reach at all times but has claimed for decades that he has no interest in photography any more, only drawing. He stated this quite emphatically in the interview that Aperture did with him about 10 years ago.

I in no way implied that they weren't friendly. I just think the picture is bad, and Newton is a great portraitist. He has to have been bushwacked by a lousy editor. I can't believe that he would choose it. It's not his style at all.

I thought you were implying that bresson was not worthy of being photographed by Newton, not that the editor picked a bad picture. Amazing how things are misread on the web.

I believe that Cartier-Bresson is one of the five greatest photographers ever and that the Decisive Moment is THE best photography book ever.

He's certainly worthy of being photographed by anyone, although he's notoriously camera shy.
