@JeffNunn, which he described as an attempt "to get better prints". I'd say you're in the right track!
Quite interesting to me, as I've only seen it online and read about it, is the halation effect in Fomapan 100, quite visible in some of the prints. I haven't used Fomapan much (neither in 35mm or 120), but this effect in the bright lights could be useful in some situations, but in others it can be difficult to control - as
@JeffNunn mentioned himself in the "lady under the tree" photo.
