Even though I have been considering leaving photography, I decided to continue to use my 5x7, and ordered three older "cut film holders" (that's what they were listed as on EB). They showed up in the morning post, SURPRISE, they weren't film holders. I received three plate holders!!! Well, this could be fun, maybe, if they had been packaged decently and one wasn't destroyed. Oh well, at least I have two usable plate holders. Don't you just love the custom packaging job.

I'd be filing a claim on eBay, that's unacceptable.

I agree... file a dispute and follow through. Don't let the seller talk you into paying the shipping either way. Decide what's a fair option and offer it. If they refuse then do what you must do.

I'm keeping them and the seller is giving me a partial refund, one third of the total including postage. These were supposed to be film holders, and to my benefit are plate holders, which go for about double what these cost. I call that a win. Just thought I'd share the wondrous packing job this "dealer" thought would be just fine.

I bought some plate holders on ebay that were in good condition. Upon arrival I noticed that they were very dirty and just about all the glue joints were failing. The response from the seller, "They are in good condition for being 100 years old."

Rick besides the story of the plate/film holders I am really happy for you that you are getting into the bug of photos again, great news!
If you are a nifty handy man those broken bits can be repaired with some PU wood glue and they will be good as new maybe just as strong.
Good for you!

I can fix the wooden bits, but the dark slide is roached.

Good news indeed!
With the holders I got, there was some problems with the springs that hold the plates in tight. Several were rusted and brittle -- and/or broken. Wood glue worked fine -- even using those cheap orange-handled clamps.

Update: I could have made a stink about these as "not as described" and filed a claim with ______, but I contacted the seller and sent pics of his foolishness. He was professional and asked what I wanted, and we agreed on an equitable solution. I keep the plate holders, and received a partial refund (he actually refunded a tad more than the agreement). I'm very satisfied, now to find another dark slide that hopefully matches.

All's well which ends well.
