As a follow up to the (there was a url link here which no longer exists) topic

the BBC has reported today that Boots has merged with the US company Walgreens and 700 jobs are being axed from Boots. For those in the US who don't know, Boots is one of the oldest high street chain stores in the UK with a large HQ in Nottingham UK. They have 2500 stores UK wide.

Interesting that this all happened at the same time Ilford has negotaiated to put 120 film back on the shelves in the Boots stores.

Do Walgreens sell film in the US?

Does this mean Ilford will try and get its film on Walgreens shelves ?

Interesting as Walgreen's own Asda in the U.K. and most if not all Asda stores have a photo dept but "of the other kind":D

If Walgreen's see a potential revival of film then it might well put Ilford film on its Asda shelves as well.

Some how I do not feel that the merger is going in the right direction. They certainly did not ask my opinion.

Walgreens is a US pharmacy chain. It probably has a little more of the convenience store feel than Boots. Though Boots has changed a lot from the original High Street Chemist. I used to buy vinyl records in Boots...and GAF slide film.

Boots is also a Drug manufacturer so that benefits both companies, the Boots headquarters is like a small town.

True, I worked on a competitive pricing system for them years ago at the Nottingham HQ.The huge office was really old school and was like something you would see in an old film with rows and rows of clerks sitting at small desks in a massive warehouse like space. And building after building on the site.

Were they reluctantly given Xmas day off to spend with Tiny Tim? :D

I didn't stay long enough to find out. It was a short term contract for a specific project and then done.

I can remember going on a school recruiting tour of the Boots factory at Nottingham....it was a massive facility, research labs like something in a science fiction film, and production lines for every kind of pharmaceutical products. It was an important employer in the area, producing career brochures seeking every kind of staff, from shop workers through to research scientists; it had major connections with Nottingham University....I believe Sir Jesse Boot, the founder in Victorian times, endowed the setting-up of the School of Pharmacy at the Uni., which is still highly respected. (No, I didn't go to work for them, sometimes wonder where I might have finished up if I had ! )

Boots Merger

It's kind of funny how it all worked out with this. Walgreens initiated the merger with the intention of moving the corporate headquarters to the UK to lessen the tax burden they have in the US. Walgreens was threatened and publicly shamed into not leaving but all the top Boots executives have taken over and moved to the US. I've either missed it or it has been reported how many of the Walgreen underlings will get the axe in the US.
