Can anyone recommend a good tutorial on understanding and using flash in manual and auto modes? Are there any good books to get me up to speed. I want to shoot some weddings for friends and on location portraits. I will be using a Mamiya C330S and a Sunpak 555. I like the big square negative of the 6x6.

Hi Jim. Welcome to APUG.

Electronic Flash in the Kodak workshop series would be a good one. It just deals with flash units and not strobes. I don't know if it is still in print though.

One of the best basic books on lighting is Hunter, Biver and Fuqua, _Light: Science and Magic_. It mainly covers studio lighting situations, but the principles apply to location and on camera flash.

Check your local library, and see what they have. The photo section is 770 in Dewey number system. I hope this helps you.

Also look at strobist.com for lots of suggestions on getting sophisticated effects with portable flash units.

The Lighting forum on photo.net is also a good source of information.
