Books on chemistry

So, what books should one read to understand how the chemistry of colour films works and why? Would something like Organic Chemistry of Photography be a good start or are there better alternatives?

I have heard mixed reviews of this book.

I cannot say how good it is, but there is an article by Rodgers and Kapecki in the Kirk Othmer Encyclopedia of Technology which gives some good color chemistry. Mees and James is a superb book as well. Along with that is the always popular book by Grant Haist. Modern Photographic Processing in two volumes.
