Might the board mods or anyone else suggest where on APUG to begin a thread concerning self-publishing?

In this Sub Forum :D

Paul Graham wrote a superb article on Self Publishing based on his of experiences self publishing "A1 - The Great North Road" (a kind of English Route 66).

Gary,

Good idea for a thread. You might PM one of the mods directly with this question

Best regards,

Rudy

This forum is a good place to start. You might also try the search function... there have been a few threads about experience people have had with Blurb and Lulu, though it hasn't come up recently.

A quick search turned up this thread...

(there was a url link here which no longer exists)

Hit up Conscientious (the blog) for various rants, screeds and ill will towards self-publishing companies. In short, he finds the printing quality to be horrid and pulls no punches.

Aren't there a number of definitions of "self-publishing" ?

True. He speaks of the Blurb type of self-publishing.

Making your own books and binding them, as well as "vanity" publishing (which I personally think gets a bad rap, based soley on the idea of publishing industry-as-gatekeeper-to-Art-with-a-capital-A) are certainly self-publishing. As is the work done by Shots, which always makes me think it was done at Kinkos.

I'm all for self-publishing. How many musicians got their break not from sending demos to record companies, but by having 1000 CD's pressed and selling them from the back of his car? It's only one layer of curation from "printing inkjet prints and selling them on the web" to 20x200.com.

If I recall correctly, Alec Soth got his break by making a book of his Mississippi prints and showing it around.
