We're just a couple of weeks away from the time when, conditions allowing, we get to see the most amazing displays of Bluebells in the UK.

I have a few favourite locations:

  • Micheldever Woods , Hampshire
  • Coton Manor, Northamptonshire
  • Ahridge Estate, Nr. Berkhamstead

Mind you, you have to be up mega-early to get the best light (before sun comes through the canopy and reflects off the petals).

Are the bluebells anything like Texas Bluebonets? Bluebonets are a large hyacynth.

If you're in Essex you should check out Strethall Woods, which is near the Cambridgeshire border. I got this shot last year. They should be very close to being in the same about now, maybe next week some time.

Actually Texas Bluebonnets are a species of Lupine

Rick

Thanks for the info-- I like it when I know what I'm looking at.

Anyone ever found a way of capturing the shade of blue accurately? I've tried various film/pale blue filter combinations and never been happy with the colour rendition. It pains me to admit that my other half's d****l camera does an excellent job of it!

The Fujichromes that I have used in the past, often made them look a touch purple rather than blue. Kodak EPN was considered one of the better choices at the time when I used colour transparency regularly. E100G might be worth considering.

Thanks Keith. My favourite locations are the woods south of the Burrator reservoir, Meldon woods near Okehampton and Tehidy in Cornwall.

Thanks LeeJ. I like in Braintree (north Essex) so I'll track down Strethall woods as it can't be more than 30-40 minutes away. Probably a target for next year as the bluebells will be past their best by now.....
