First post ....

just want to say how overwhelmingly beautiful it is to find you all here .... too many stories too long to share, but just briefly, former journalism / magazine editing/production student, spjx member, hospital p.r. flack,
newspaper reporter and freelancer ... as well as chronic student in the field of depression ...

in a recent discussion of photography with therapist centered around past interests, analog vs. digital came up.... sadly, he is a convert to digital. I tried, rather poorly, to explain why photography still, to me, means the capturing of light on film, the sometimes agony and sometimes serendipity of seeing, composing, and creating, before the shutter blinks, from my eye to final image. Bless his heart ... he was only trying to help me solve my Gordian knot of image storage and retrieval and showed me his Lightroom files on his pc.... "but that's not photography" I thought to myself as he showed me the many manipulations he could do ... "thanks, but no thanks."

It left me wondering if I am the only one left in the universe who understands the exquisiteness of writing on film with light.

Thank you all for being here. I have a feeling delving into this community is going to be a bit of the salve my soul has been searching for. Looking forward to it.

Welcome.

As you can tell from some of our post counts, this can be a good place to spend some time.

The print exchanges are a lot of fun.

There may also be real APUG meet-ups in your area. I'd guess that you are in one of the areas that border the Gulf of Mexico.

APUG is quite international, so you may want to add your location to your profile.

Wilkommen in APUG -- and tell ur shrink to take a hike. A day in the darkroom will do wonders for your head.

I'm also a former newspaper person, now successfully retired. Use a digital to catch the grandkids, but the rest is all film.

A kindred spirit. Digital leaves me cold, too. I spent quite a bit of money on a very good digital camera and find no joy when holding it in my hands. It's irrational and makes no sense, but it is how I feel. Welcome home to APUG.

I'm sure you'll enjoy it here. A huge group of film lovers with an incredible wealth of experience and knowledge. And oh yes, they're a friendly lot, too.

Welcome to the asylum. Had the same conversation with my therapist, she believed after she saw the photos.

Apug is my sanctuary in the digital world. When I'm feeling adrift, I also meditate.

Welcome to APUG. You may find that you will have a new set of problems now. There is Gear Acquisition Syndrome (or simply GAS). Most people will think that you are crazy if you use film. Then there is the problem of setting up a darkroom at home. Oh, and don't forget about being broke because you spend too much on film, paper and chemicals.

Enjoy your stay in the asylum that is also known as APUG.

GAS is an onramp to buying filters, lenses, camera, bigger cameras, ...

Welcome. I joined fairly recently. I'm a Digital user moving over to film and as some one said to me when I introduced myself. Its great that you can get some practice on the digital simulator first before you try the real thing.

"Digital photography simulator"

That's brilliant!

Like calling Quebec: Practice France.

(Just a joke)
