Sorry I've been remiss in posting that I received a 4x5 cyanotype print of downtown Los Angeles from Peter early this week. I really like the way that the vertical composition uses trees and a lamppost to frame the building. Good tonality especially in the shadows which are nicely dark. Thanks Peter!

Thank you very much for your updates! I have fantastic news. According to my secret little list, at this point *EVERYBODY* have either received a print or should expect one in the mail in the nearest future!!!! I don't remember this ever happening on BPX, at least definitely not on my watch. Great job everyone! I'm so happy! Let's hope all the prints make it to the destination in perfect condition. And if you have not mailed your print yet, there is still time!

I received a very large print (I haven't had a chance to open it yet) from Loren this morning. It's a backup print. Completely unexpected. Very excited and very much looking forward to unwrapping it when I get home. Thank you for this pleasant surprise.

Hi all,
I haven't sent yet. I wanted to make some carbon prints. It did work out all right, but I couldn't make as many prints as I wanted. And I need some carbon prints for an upcoming show of the photo club. Last few weeks was about working for over 60 hours a week, so I hadn't time for an alternative yet. But I'll make new "regular" prints next week and will ship then.

I received an absolutely gorgeous print from Ken, with a very detailed story about the image, how it was shot and printed and should be displayed. I really like knowing the story behind the image!

Did I says the print is gorgeous ? It is also dry mounted, selenium toned, ready for wall display !

I also received a lovely Cyan print (I love alt processes) from Peter Schlager (not sure about the orthograph), which is, I suppose, a "backup print".

I suppose the best way to flatten it is to put it in a large book ? The postman was not nice with it.

One question remains at this point, how do you feel about the "backup prints" experiment? Should we make it a permanent feature of the BPX or ditch it? I'd like to hear some feedback.

Rather than backup prints why not multiple exchanges? So people can sign up for 1-3 prints and then they are matched with an equal number of prints to receive. More like the postcard exchange.

I do apologize that it's from an older negative instead of something new. But I live in a temperate rainforest climate that is not kind to the pursuit of outdoor photography during the winter months. It's not the cold that gets in the way. It's the endless rain, and sometimes snow, that makes camera life difficult.

I think adelorenzo's suggestion is great, but international postage is expensive for a matted print properly protected (over $20. for international postage).

Also, I wonder if some people interpreted the back up print program different than I, and sent three unique photos. My back-up prints were the same image as my primary print. What I might do differently next time is to send the primary print dry mounted and matted, but the backup prints will be unmounted photos in an envelope which will cost very little in postage.

And now it's my turn to receive a print. I have received a beautiful and a very delicate print from UKJohn in immaculate condition. It is a long exposure of a rock in the sea. But the words cannot express the amazing look of the photo! It looks more like a rock sitting in a sea of milk topped by a tinge of pink in the sky, as if right after a sunrise. The delicate highlights are masterfully split-toned for an amazing subtle color effect. At first glance I would have sworn it was a lith print. Just amazing. Now, I simply cannot imagine that a scan could show express the beauty of this print! Personally, I would not even try to scan it. You have to hold it in your hand to fully appreciate.

Loren, it is ok either way. There were no specific requirements for the backup prints, so any way you would do it is fine.

Anthony, it's an interesting idea. It may be a bit tricky to match up the variable number of recipients. I don't know how PCX organizer does it. For me, the main goal for backup prints was to ensure that everybody gets a print without exception.

What I usually do is sending more than one print. If I afford the package and postage it is worth sending two or three prints.

Can someone help with uploading a scan of my BPX22 photo? I went to Media and tried to select the file of my photo scan and the following message appears: “The uploaded file does not have an allowed extension.” It is a TIFF file, size is 372 x 478, 473kb.

What am I doing wrong?

Try converting it to a jpeg or png file.

372 x 478 pixels will be fairly small on the screen.

Already two weeks ago, I received another very nice print from John Edwards (UKJohn). Reading the description, John made quite an effort to get to the location of the photograph. The print depicts a big round piece of rock (granite?) sitting on a limestone plateau in the bleak morning sunlight. As I'm not an early morning person, I usually miss these views. The print is well done with deep blacks and still good shadow detail. The sky shows some clouds and overall it has a nice contrast. The thiocarbamide toner gave it a warm tone. I like it a lot. A surprise this week I received two prints from Laurent in France. Both are wonderful but I particularly like the very low key one, it was a daring choice to print it that way. Really draws you in to the image.
