This is another vote for the Blackjacket by QuietWorks. I bought the hybrid model which works great. But this company is terrific to order from. After I ordered I received an e-mail advising me of my ship date. After I received it, I realized (several weeks later) that I had ordered the wrong size. Sent an e-mail advising them of my problem, they ok'd the return and sent another one. Let's here it for good service!

I have bought from Keith twice. His service is outstanding. Three day shipping from the U.S. to Japan. He is truly a gentleman, and makes a terrific product.

I love mine. Of course when I bought it I purchased a 5x7 to fit my body not my camera. I can use the thing now as a tent. It worked great in a snowstorm to keep me nice and warm. It also works well as a damn fine darkcloth.

An excellent product from really nice people. I have two Blackjackets (8x10 and 4x5). I love them - it's like having a darkroom around your ground glass!

Looks ver promising on their site. What do you think would be preferable, regular model or hybrid and why ? The sun beats down very hard in my country, so that may be an improtant factor makign my choice...

Hi Alex,

The original weighs about 8 oz and the hybrid weighs about 17 oz. The original does not breath as well as the hybrid which is very useful for more humid climates and areas such as the eastern US (Pennsylvania). For somewhere as dry as Israel, I would presume that humidity should not present a problem and the lighter original would probably be fine. But, if you sweat a lot, the humidity inside the dark cloth may become a bit of a problem and you may find the hybrid an advantage.

I agree with Richard, both of my Blackjackets are the light weight original models and I use them in the Sonoran deserts of Arizona and northern Mexico.

Greetings gang,

Thanks for the plugs. I'm grateful you appreciate my efforts. This has been a very pleasant (if distracting) adventure, only made more pleasant by the people I am dealing with. The LF community is terrific to work with, and I believe the pursuit of quality and making the world a little more enjoyable is a trait we all have in common.

But, I can only take credit for what is within my control. With the speedy deliveries (when product is in stock) the kudos go to the much maligned United States Postal Service. I have found working with them to be tremendous. Reasonable prices, excellent service. In think their bad reputation was earned long before FEDEX revolutionized package delivery. To their credit the USPS has paid close attention to how it was done and now offers very competitive service.

And, Gary, even I was amazed at how fast the Global Priority Mail package got to Japan. Promised service to any international destination is 4 to 6 business days, plus whatever additional time it takes to clear local customs. So, perhaps you should also thank the Japanese postal service for efficiency.

I guess it is also a sad commentary on the state of customer service in the world that what I take as the minimum level of service that should be offered, would be considered exceptional. I treat you all as I would hope to be treated by any vendor, as individuals.

As for which model to choose, Alex, they are all correct. That is to say, it comes down to your tolerance for heat. I used the very first one (The ORIGINAL) for four years in the mountains and deserts of California, and never had a problem with heat. I think that may be due to a number of reasons. I wear a hat. I don't sweat much. I tend to work in the shoulder hours of the day (morning and evening). I also am confident that there is no better solution (creating a dark environment, access to controls, workability in wind, weight/function).

But when I began to ship them to more humid environments, customers were looking for a fabric that breathed. So, I developed the HYBRID. So you can imagine my surprise when a customer in Great Britain remarked that they found the ORIGINAL too stuffy. It is a personal thing. How much you sweat. What conditions you typically work in. I now make it a practice that anytime someone orders an ORIGINAL to verify that that is the model they truly want.

Both models work the same, they cost the same, the HYBRID just weighs a little more (still only just over a pound). So for all but the most dedicated backpackers, the choice is fairly simple. Go for a little more comfort at the expense of a little more weight.

As for comparison to other hood-style cloths on the market, they all have the same issues with comfort in heat. In selecting the fabric for the HYBRID model, I made a decision to work with the most opaque, uncoated, water resistant black I could find. The fabric is a very tight weave, but does breathe. Toss in the sleeves for windy conditions (and ventilation to some degree) and the BLACKBAG(TM) feature, and I think it is pretty nifty, even if someone else had been the one to think it up.

Thanks again folks. It is a pleasure to serve you.

Truly good stuff. Worth every penny. My hybrid model virtually eliminated any complaints I have ever had about a dark cloth. My hands are free even in windy conditions, and I can concentrate on what I see in the GG, rather than just seeing the GG. Kudos.Bravo.

Kieth I found that hat with the fabric I told you about. It's the only one remaining that the South american monkey's didn't destroy.

Ah David, and everyone else. I was afraid you'd ask. ;-)

I took the ULF patterns to Rockford in June to the View Camera Conference, where I tested them with a variety of cameras. It was a great opportunity and helped me understand why Sandy had expressed concern about the length, and ability to pull a dark slide. So, after I got back, I devised a solution to those concerns and had some prototypes made up and put them out for testing. I'll hold off discussing that now, until I am in production. No sense in getting everyone all lathered up.

Turn around time on the revised prototypes has been constantly pushed back due to demand for normal product. Some recent customers are aware of this, as I've hit bottom on inventory of the most popular versions recently while I await for product to arrive. For that reason, I've tried to fly below the radar here until my higher volume manufacturer came on line. To my relief, I got a call yesterday that they just completed my first order, so I'm hoping the transition will permit shorter turnaround on all my R&D.

Aggie, I'd forgotten about that. If you don't mind popping it into the mail, I'll pay your shipping.

Thanks!

Thanks a lot Keith, guys. Pretty much clarified by hesitations.
Keith, I was nicely suprized to find the person behind this fine product here in the forum communicating directly with his customers - this is wonderful thing..this is what I really appreciate in the manufacturers who care about their customers and stand behind the quality of their products.
I've wrote you an email query (to your email on your site) asking for your advise, now the most things are things are clear except probably of the neck size to choose from for my Shen-Hao 4x5 (40" or that one for 5x7 ?) . Just let me know in your reply to my email and also please provide S&H to Israel. I'll take the hybrid version (we have here lots of humidity - about half of the country resides on the sea shore...).
I'll be placing an order instantly (PayPal CC).

Alex

I recently ordered the 40" hybrid and found it to be a little small when I got it. I was able to exchange for a 5x7 size which was shipped before my return was even in the mail!!! Excellent service and an excellent product.
