Bob, what aspheric lenses are you talking about? My Biogon, 47/5.6 SA, and 65/8 Ilex don't have aspherical surfaces and don't behave the way you've described.

"Focus in"...

Lynn wrote a 4 part series of articles that were published back in the mid-90's in View Camera on the history of lens design. The article (part 4) where he talks about "focus in" is in the March/April 1996 issue.

At the PhotoExpo in NYC last year, I bought the CD with all of the lens articles. Regardless of what many think of the other aspects of the magazine, the CD collection is money well spent. Articles are by Kerry Thalmann, Lynn Jones, Arne Croell, Ron Wisner, Steve Simmons, and a few others.
