Of silent, or near silent ones, I love the shutter of my humble Olympus mju. I know, it is not a classic one and it has no manual control, but I like it a lot.
 
I love the click of leaf shutters. Also the superfast click-wind of canon 1v.

It's why I prefer thumbwheel advance to motorised drive, there's no point having a quiet shutter if it's followed be bzeeep..! A few auto compacts, including my Minolta AF-DL only advance film after you take your finger off the shutter. The shutter makes a barely audible click, and you can walk somewhere less obtrusive to allow the film to wind on.

I had mine forgotten in a box with other compacts! I will definitely try it as I am on a spree with compact AF cameras. :smile:
I prefer all mechanical ones, but once in a while I get a p&s out just for the quick fun of it.

If you prefer thumbwheel advance then surely you must be a fan of the Oly XA -- a very quiet and unobtrusive camera if there ever was one.

Yes, I prefer my XA3 over my MjuII. I also prefer zone focus over AF cameras.

Another Oly winner in this regard is the Trip 35, another zone focus camera. I have a copy. The selenium meter still works and gives correct exposure.

Snagged this off the 'net. Mine looks just like this one. Black, that is.

I really like the shutter feel of my Nikon FM.
 
I think the cameras with the smoothest shutter release and film advance are the Minolta XE/XE-1/XE-7 and the Minolta XD11, designed and built in cooperation with Leica, and which were the bodies Leica based their R3 and R4 on. Of the two I think the XE is the smoothest (buttery smooth!) and is fun to play around with even without film loaded.

I concur with your assessment. When I tested my MLU equipped SLRs - with the mirror in the up position, to determine which has the least vibration, I found that the Minolta XK's shutter was noticeably more quiet then the others.

BTW, XK is for the US market, X1 for European market and initially XM for Japanese market. Later, the motorized XM was for all markets.

Can't make up my mind. Is it the Leica M3 or the Leica M2? Almost whisper quiet. However if louder sound is your thing, you are correct. There is nothing to beat the classy "thwack
' of the Hasselblad 500CM........Regards!
 
There is some confusion here. Shutter feel and shutter sound are different, right?
Sound, I've become very fond of: Kiev/Contax, Nikon F, Rolleiflexen, screwmount Leicas & their higher quality clones.
Release feel: Nikkormat, F, F2, Leicas especially a good M3, good screwmount Pentaxen, Kiev/Contax but the postwar Contax is smoother.
Nikon F2 and Nikkormats are a bit harsh soundwise, particularly the F2, but the cameras are so good it doesn't matter.
 
From electronic machines most probably Nikon F80 (N80).
From old school mechanical devices - Olympus OM-1 and OM-2

You should definitely try Bronica ETR camera. It sounds like slamming a door on something much bigger than Yugo :D When you release the shutter, birds fly away in terror and at least three bodyguards are likely to slam you down on the floor for firing a weapon.

Looks like a pepper shaker to me. If I had one, I would really put pepper in it.
