Best portrait lens for Mamiya RZ67

Which lens do you prefer for portraits on your RZ67 ?

I have an RB67, I would go for the 127 or 180.

the 180 as best overall versatile lens. That's the very first lens I ever got for my RB. I added the 90 later to give me something wider. I've not shot with the 150 SF but that's a bit of a specialty lens.

I use the RB 150/3.5 KL(same as the RZ version)and love it.

Depends on what type of portraits you are talking about. For tight head-and-shoulders stuff, the 180 W-N is the cheapest good lens in that length range, and it has nice bokeh. But I think the 210 APO and 250 APO are better, and better choices for that type of shot. For casual portraits, esp. with shallow DOF, the 110 is nice. For environmental portraits, I think the 65 L/A is hard to beat. Super sharp, wide but not too-wide.

I use my 110/2.8 for most portraits, sometimes the 180/4.5 W-N for headshots using the prism. I'm looking to trade the latter for a 250APO though as I find it a bit short.

Er yeah, just like EdSawyer says, even agreeing with the use of the 65, especially if you're stuck in close quarters.

My 180 K/L is very nice.

The 140 Macro C works well too.

either 110 or 140 for close portraits. 110 has the largest aperture along other RZ lens.

I have 180 and it is a great one, i never feel i want another lens, if i have to then i will go with 210, i mean longer than 180, but i can't force you with my choice, am very happy and satisfied with 180.

Note: my next lens for RZ when i will have budget will be 110 no doubt, i hope.

My #1 favorite lens is the 140 Macro lens

I vote for the 210 mm APO super contrast and sharpness !

This is my 2nd favorite lens, but it tends to be a little long.
I use this lens for tight head shots.

My #1 favorite lens is the 140 Macro lens, great for 3/4 shots.

My 3rd favorite lens is the 90 mm lens, for full lengths.

Add a 1.4 Extender for the 210 APO, they work great together.

I really dig the 250. I've done some nice portraits outside with it and you get a lot of compression. You can easily shoot at small apertures and still get a nice bokeh.

The 110mm has awesome bokeh (sorry this example is a little soft due to me) and only very tiny barrell distortion and has a 3D look shot wide open.

The 127mm has awesome bokeh and ZERO barrell distortion and is amazingly sharp.

The 180mm renders fine details very well without being too harsh fro the face.


These are three 3 awesome lenses.



The 150 C SF is a must have classic soft focus for the RB. While it can be mated with the RZ, I read somewhere that C lenses shutter trip mechanism is too stiff for the RZ body to safely accomodate.


BTW, I have the 210 APO preliminary found it *may* be too sharp/contrasty for adult skin. I think its a landscape lens?

Inspect all purchased lenses carefully. There are alot of new old stock Mamiya lenses stored in boxes which is not ideal for fungus prevention. I have rejection rate of about 15% on these new old stock lenses.

On a positive note, the Mamiya RZ offer awesome optics despite their large, clunky appearance.

I may post photos i've taken by 180 on my RZ, but my next RZ lens will be definitely 110mm, not just because or for portraits only, but to be a general lens as well.
