First and foremost question: what format are you shooting? That determines to a great degree what film I suggest you start with. IF you have a look in mind for how you want your photos to turn out, can you cite some examples? This will also help. One easy way for a lot of people to lose interest is to have a vision in their head of "I want my photos to look like XXX's photos", then they pick the totally wrong film, wrong developer, and wrong camera to achieve that look, and when their photos don't look like XXX, they abandon the effort thinking they've failed.

I'm thinking about starting b&w more too, but I don't have a darkroom. I wonder if this is the case with the OP as well.
