I'd look into Superia 100 or Reala 100. They are cheaper than professional films and have saturated color. Freestyle carries both of them. $3 per roll for Superia 100, and $3.50 per roll of Reala 100.
This is from my first roll. This is just for example. Untweaked in any way, as you can see. Don't know how that scratch got there.
This stuff is very grainy, more noticeable on some of the other photos.

I have done a ton of shooting with Superia 400 and 800, and only think of them as "grainy" when my exposure was very bad. I get rather nice 8x12s from Superia 800, even if it is overexposed by about a stop.
Underexposure leads to the mushy-looking, washed out grain, and overexposure leads to the sharp, gnarly grain.
From looking at that photo I posted, which way do you think I went? I was periodically over-exposing, but didn't take notes.
