Wanting to purchase a stater light set. I'm doing more "documentary" style work, at all hours of the day, mostly outside, and think some lights would really great. More specifically, I'm doing lots of work that revolves around the outdoor recreation community, so lots of portraits, but they are mostly out of doors. I use a Nikon D610 and Nikon manual film cameras. Recommendations?!

Look into Yongnuo speedlights.

My setup is a mix of YN speedlights with YN radios, Amazon Basic lightstands, Amazon Basic batteries and chargers, and some giant Godox softboxes. It's good enough to get you started and upgrade piecemeal.

Safe your money and Start with natural light. For beginners the best way - for profs the big "exercise".
I remember so much worst lighted scenes from profs I can't tell.
The avaible light at low light should also be no Problem to you.
Notice what the light you find on a set is looking like - it is most natural.
In many many years from now you may be a superb expert and THEN you can begin to light a scene with artificiell light in a manner that it is looking like a " llogical" light [natural light]..
But that is a competition for real experts and many many louse with this task.

Sorry for stating again - but to explain I have a lot of nice shots but also just a couple are scanned for the net. Here is one again to show what the impact without any light may give you :

So if you will not start a carrier as a wedding photographer (there you may need some reflector light for outdoor) you perhaps should think about now to A V O I D any light from lighting units the next 5 years !!!!!!!!

with regards

PS : I was forced to use "Bronco" light for shooting Studio fashion - I remember some years ago.
1) expensive 2) no need of because ISO 800 with digital was quite enough quality to that time - in short I realy hate it.

I would advise to look at the Godox flashes of the 2.4 GHz X-system. There are speedlites, battery/110V powered studio strobes and triggers that are all compatible with each other. You could start off with just a speedlight. Later on you can expand if necessary with more speedlights, a small battery strobes like the ad200 or a bigger studio strobe, softboxes etc. The speedlight can control your other flashes (trigger and power settings). Or get a trigger and control everything from the trigger. If you would ever decide to switch from Nikon to another camera brand or add another camera of a different brand, all you need is to get a new/additional trigger and all flashes work with the new camera.

Robert Hall has a lot of informative videos on the Godox system on his youtube channel.

Outdoor recreation community? Does this mean outdoor sports? If you are looking for flash for on-camera use hand held portable I suggest browsing through the flash section at the website of the NYC store B&H www.bhphotovideo.com where you will find plenty of choices that may help you identify the brands and types that interest you.
