Can't even view the clip here in Paris -- "not intended for your area". I wonder what the deal is with the BBC being so chary about letting a global audience view such programming online, or downloading radio programs (which often seem to be available for streaming for only one week)?

Quick answer: copyright and broadcasting rights issues.

I'll let someone else have a huge whinge and post a longer answer.

I have read that domestic BBC content isn't available for overseas online viewing. It's likely blocked for non-UK IP addresses. The rationale is that people outside the UK haven't paid licensing fees or taxes to support development of the content, so aren't allowed to see it. I guess other pathways are allowed through payment for redistribution over satellite and cable.

Being flippant, because you haven't paid the license fee. Being only somewhat less flippant, it's because you haven't paid the license fee and the BBC have a for-profit commercial arm - BBC Worldwide - which commercialises BBC productions by selling them to overseas broadcasters; overseas broadcasters are unlikely to pay top whack for programming which their viewers can download freely from the Internet.

Well, that is all true for viewing full programs on iPlayer of course, but you'd think it in their interests to let anyone view trailers - it would increase demand worldwide for that program.

I should point out that I can't watch some online stuff that's in the US, from the UK, so it works both ways. Like I said before, it's a broadcasting rights issue and they like to sell shows on a country to country basis.

Heather, they have developed a proxy application that allows those outside the States to watch the shows on Hulu or wherever - I wonder why something similar hasn't been created for the BBC? See here, though I can't vouch for it, never having used it myself. Ninjavideo is apparently good too.

In any case, refer to my previous post on this subject about finding a torrent for those of you who are desperate; unlike the MPAA/RIAA, I doubt very much that the Beeb will come after you (of course, that doesn't make it any more legal).

Thanks for letting us know. I would have missed a great documentary. Very interesting to see behind the scenes of Rankins photo shoots. He really does seem to be one of them all round nice guys who you could just sit down and chat with for hours about photography. It was good to see Bailey at his usual best too.

You can't watch it on i-Player but there are repeats - that's what I like about BBC4, they give you a chance to be disorganised! (referring to me, not you, I missed the first half)

This is what Sky+ remote-record is for - when you're down the pub and suddenly remember that thing you really didn't want to miss, you can use your mobile phone to tell the box to record it for you .

I enjoyed it too. I liked the bit with David Bailey the most probably.
IMHO the original were more interesting (at least for me), maybe because they already so well fixed in our memory? Probably not easy or correct to compare anyway.
I did not like much his re-shoot of Avedon's elephants and model, somehow for me he did not work out too well.

Thanks for the info, will try and catch it again. Haven't actually got access to BBC4 or any digital channels just now (how analouge is that ?), so should maybe plug in that box thing I was given last year!

I think BBC4 and Film4 are worth getting. Makes the licence fee a bit more worthwhile!

Mike,

The image quality of digital terrestrial should be better than the analogue service. However, in my experience FM radio has better sound quality compared to DAB.
