Hey all,

So I biffed on loading a real of Ilford 3200 the other day, and ended up with a big nasty spot about 3 frames long that is opaque and milky.

My concern is that there are some residual chemicals leftover that might damage the rest of the film over time, or jeopardize any other films nearby.

What's the protocol for this? Would you recommend refixing, washing, or what? I just dont' want to store a chemically-laden strip of film with other negatives with the fear that it will contaminate it over time, etc. Basically I'm paranoid and want to know what is recommended.

And if you're the kind of person that doesn't use stop, don't bother responding  I want to hear from the thorougly fastidious, neurotic archivists, "cleanliness fetishists" out there.

Thanks in advance!

I would refix, and wash. It sounds as if the film emulsion at that point was in contact with the adjacent base, so no development or fixing has occurred.

I'd try to fix the strip in question again, and wash it, I've had good luck rescuing negatives this way. OTOH, if the developer didn't properly get to it, you're doomed. And, to qualify my advice, I don't use stop for film, but I change my fixer often.

Ok, thanks guys. I think I will definitely do this.

I'm not too concerned about salvaging the images at this point, I just want to make sure I do everything right.

No worries on not using stop, you are forgiven...

Cheers!
