What do the unsavory individuals do with the photographs? What is the risk to the student? Does the photograph remove part of the soul?

Its puzzling, social media likes to demonize men with cameras. I made the unfortunate mistake of going into a public space yesterday during my lunch break, its school holiday time! The little buggers were everywhere and I had a 70 year old camera in my hands, got called a creep with out even taking a photo.

Often the bad guy in the movies and on tv are photographs. And we know that you cannot trust them.

I walk with dog and all sorts of cameras with daughter to, from school and during school. But I'm not getting too close during school breaks. I also wear cameras while I'm shopping and only good comments from kids about cameras.

I don't understand what (general) data protection has to do with class photos ?!

It is under Union jurisdiction. Have you seen anything smart from anything which has Union word? I only aware of stupid regulations from idiots who has nothing else to do but regulate people's life. Big bro is watching you.

Now, I suspect virtually all school photos are digital. And there has been consolidation of school photography companies (at least in the US). So there is a greater threat of their systems being hacked and literally millions of photo (probably with names) stolen.

Easy solution: require all school photos to be taken on film with good-old RA4 prints delivered. Can't hack film & paper. I think...

Funny that everybody who gets their nose out of joint seeing someone with a film camera are themselves carrying digital hackable cameras in the guise of a phone. If you pull out your phone and start taking videos everyone is A-OK with that.

In the US, at least, if you are out in public you can be photographed without your permission.

Things don't get better - they just get different.

Memes and NFTs. its a thumb to the nose
of the survalence staete <sic>
that the id photos are a part of to begin with.

and on top of that ...
this daring group of hackers holding them hostage so some
parent will a defaced photo of their bundle of joy
ending up in their and their friends FB feeds with a animated Groucho Marx mustache and glasses
endorsing a product they don't appreciate like ducolaxx soft gel tabs, Maloxx and Movantic
... and the parent are called to pay a ransom to the thieves .. but. only realize
they raised the ransom $, to be paid to some address on the dark web part in etherium and part BC
and they have to hire Queen Latiffa, Timothy Hutton and Mr T. to take the poor pitied fools down.
