I was at a bookstore a couple of years ago and found B&W there, this was what got me into photography to begin with. I'm positive other people feel this way too. Anyway, I've been tracking them for a couple of years and I even entered their photo contest (I almost won). Anyway, I've been reading the publisher's letter for a while and at first he said they were doing a big issue at the end of the year and it would be 228 pages and be released in November. Then it said it was going to be 196 pages. Now it's going to be 228 pages, be almost double the price on newsstands, be released in October and not be sent to all of its subscribers and it's only being shipped national, not international??

As a subscriber, who paid $55 to get two years, I'm worried that I'm not going to get their big annual contest edition and that I would have to fork over $13 to buy it on newsstands. Not only that, but are they going to be publishing a November/December issue this year or is this one it?

I sent them an e-mail earlier this week I haven't gotten a response from B&W yet. Can anyone else help me?

Why not use one of those new-fangled telephone thingies? I tried it a few months back, and you know, the folks @ B&W picked up on the other end after just a couple of ring sounds.

I only have a cell phone and really I shouldn't have to. I mean, is it really such a far concept to send a magazine an e-mail about your subscription and reply back with information? That's what e-mail is for...right?

I very rarely use email when trying to get a hold of a magazine, often, these emails are not staffed correctly, and when dealing with a nationally distributed magazine, sometimes that volume of email received can be over whelming.

Just got the current issue and it does state that the Special contest edition WILL NOT be sent to subscribers...suspect that production cost keep them from sending it to subscribers. They did say that they will have 'something' for subscribers (perhaps the chance to purchase at a discount - my thoughts not theirs).

While I understand your disappointment, don't be to hard on them. When you stop and look at how small ads are, and understanding the cost to produce such a quality publication, well let's just say I find the $55 for 2 years a good deal. There are mags out there that cost that much for 1 year and that for 4 issues.

Unlike with a 'phone call where you get to know if someone has received your call (i.e. they pick up the 'phone) emails can easily disappear. One of mine to a holiday company sat in spam filter purgatory for 2 months and another was mis-filed by a temp resulting in another 2 month delay - and those are just the ones I know about. It happens.

Be a luddite - use the 'phone!

Cheers, Bob.

Just got off the phone with a lady in their subscription dept. She said that this super-issue is an "annual" and is seperate from their regular circualtion. So, in effect, they're coming out with 7 issues this year. They will have a november/december issue that will be sent to subscribers.

They think they'll make this super-issue available to subscribers for $9.99/copy.

I read on Focus Magazine's website that they're coming out a 208 page Collector's Edition in November and that they're looking for submissions. Maybe I'll see if they'll take my submissions. Anyone know how to contact them?

Bob.

Bob, you shouldn't be so whimsical. Not everyone is as intelligent as you are!

I believe it's pretty easy to submit images to Focus...now to get them published, that's another story. It's interesting when images look nice as prints or on the computer, then when it's printed it doesn't look as beautiful.
