I too, gave up on 35mm after years of disappointment. I settled in on two films. Since MF doesn't have to work so hard to make a great looking 11x14, I am not required to use a super slow and super fine grained film. Since all of my MF work is done hand held I opted for a film that can be pushed and one that has huge latitude. That would be TRI-X. Developed in MYTOL, TRI-X will give me the kind of sharpness and contrast range I am looking for and keeps my shutter speeds up where hand held is easily do-able. For LF, I use FP4 due to it's greater contrast. Since LF is never handheld and MF is always handheld - film speed, contrast and sharpness are best served for me by these two films. Sticking with just these makes all the discovery about image capture and not film evaluation. I did spend my time evaluating many films for several years before settling in on these two. You need to find what makes you happy - then stick with it.
