I just put a check in the mail to Michael and Paula to make their big paper buy. Probably most of you AZO people (you know who you are) got the e-mail. If we will have this type of paper in the future, this is a good time to ensure it by stocking up on a several year supply. I recon you can get this info off the web site. I could post the e-mail on request. They would like checks and need the funds in 3 weeks.

I certainly can't afford a several years supply, espeically when the paper has not even been tested yet. I will however take a leap of faith and order a 100 sheet box of 8x10 to help the process move along. I just hope they don't have to go to triple weight.

it will be single weight

From Michael's post in the Azo forum:
"The paper will probably be single weight. There is the possibility that it will have to be heavier—double or even triple weight—but the consensus is that most prefer single weight (as we do) and we will try to have the paper made that way."

If I had a million dollars.... I don't have a clue where people get their money from, to spend hundreds of dollars on photo paper.
If I could, I would contribute to this noble cause, as I would love to get into contact printing more seriously at least testing something like Azo or whatever this new paper is.

I had hoped to eventually get into more b/w and I have always felt AZO produced some of the nicest prints. I too would buy if I was racing that dog *now* and if I had the money.

I wish M&P and those who use AZO well.

If only we could all get together to group-buy the things we love: Pan-X, Supper XX, Portriga, etc., etc., etc. The list goes on and on...

You can trust the fact that this paper will meet the high standards of the person that has the most experience with its necessary properties (Michael Smith) or he will simply not use it nor sell it.

We are all being challenged by a market in LF products that is going through a financial adjustment to a new set of consumption economics. The reset button on the sales trend lines has been pushed. Clearly, it is important that we all demonstrate our interest in this craft called LF and demonstrate our commitment to the films and papers that we desire to use in the future. In this regards each of us have only two real options. We can chose to be part of the solution with your checkbook (TMY, AZO or Ilford) or we can decide to sit on the sidelines for one reason or another. Quibbling over details or being down about the situation will not solve anything. These are the cards that we have been dealt so lets play them. Looking back five years at what was predicted on the forums for 2006, our analog habit was already supposed to be rendered obsolete by digital technology. Call me old fashioned but I will always believe that where there is a will, there is a way.

Onward!

It's one HELL of a gamble they are taking, a quite daring one. Some would say they should play it safe and not do this. Some would say they should be content with their success to date and ease into semi-retirement. I say its a quite audacious and bold move. Maybe its just my old-fashioned farm-boy mentality, but I hope they pull it off.

I was thinking the same thing. It would be easy for them to walk away and not worry about another Azo. The only fly in the ointment would have been that soft Canadian grade two. It's going to be exciting to see how this plays out. Kudos to M&P.

Cheers, James

Sweet!!!

There are those that lament what is now gone and then there are those that take a gamble to preserve it. Then there are those that let everyone else take the gamble to preserve something great and benefit from their initiative. But shame on those that take advantage of the benefits of others who gamble and then comment on the foolishness of taking risks.

I don't have much interest in the Azo contact printing style of MAS or Paula, but I'm wondering if a (slow) paper like this might be better than standard FB paper for photograms?

Very well said. Thank God there are only a few narrow minded individuals that fit this description. With this point of view the industry would have turned out the lights on sheet film years ago.

Smile - I can't remember when things have been this good!

AZO CLONE

Even though I never really got off the ground with AZO I'm willing to support this endeavor for the general good of our craft. Whoever is sitting around watching the list of products disappear had better wake up and think about contributing
to a worthy cause. You get ALL your money back if there is no paper. Damn-we gotta have paper to do our work.....anyone who doesn't think AZO had "it" should go to the MOMA in NYC and look at the EW prints on the wall.

Best of luck to Michael And Paula Chamlee on getting this going. I know a lot of people will benefit from it.

I'll be putting in an order for 11x14".

Is anyone is interested in splitting a box of 11x14? I would be happy to handle the repackaging and pay shipping from Michael to me. Then you just pay shipping for your half from me.

I would love to buy a whole box but recent changes in my wife's employment situation has restricted my materials budget for the tme being.

The only risk involved is whether the quality measures up to Azo. Since Michael and Paula have had input into the process since the git-go, it may be a lot better. So, since I'm standing at this crap table, I'll take the dice when they come my way. If the paper is better, "Lucky SEVEN a WINNNNNAAHHHH!!!!"

As someone said in another thread, it's only $85.00 fer cryin' out loud. And for grade 3 that's actually a price reduction.

This is a pool purchase that's going on? I don't know
anything of the M & P business other than AZO and some
of what went with it.

There are many users of contact speed print paper and
constant demand. I'd think they could ship off their own
shelfs. IIRC, they did do that with AZO. Chloride
contact speed papers do have very good
shelf life do they not?

I'm going to be critical. I think it remise on their part in
not confirming the source and character of the paper.
I suppose the grade has been established.

Is that the way to do this business. No money down,
no inventory to keep? Dan

Phil Davis reviewed two Forte Contact papers in the
April 2000 Volume 7 Issue 2 of D-Max; a publication of
the View Camera Store. An RC and a single weight FB
were tested. Phil: "...hard to fault" an "...alternative
to Azo".

Editor's Note: "...available on special order" Well all
that's some time ago. May still be the case. Forte may
be the current source. I hope Chen Yun or who ever
is not about to cut Forte's ... Dan

I believe PE brought up a while ago in another thread that some of the paper that doesn't keep well in the freezer has developer in it. I would hope this paper will be developer free?

I did indeed say that. It is a guesstimate on my part until I get enough hard data, but it looks to be true.

But, if this is an Azo work alike, it should not have incorporated developer.

Azo did not. And, BTW, it is a common misconception that Azo is a pure AgCl emulsion. It has extended blue sensitivity, easily seen using a spectrosensitometer, which is not possible from a pure AgCl, so we have to wait and see how this paper looks with a battery of tests to 'compare' with Azo. I'm not implying that differences will be bad in any way though.
