Revolving Doors are way cool My darkroom has one too......How about that......... Uni staff take stuff home and put it in a shed rather than let it go to the dump..... well done

Keep hunting, It took me 5 years for me to build my darkroom and find all the gear, I am improving the air ventilation at the moment not enough of it!!!

Still haven't heard back from anybody I have emailed yet
But I did find another 5108, again seller doesn't seem willing to work with me to get it here! arrghghh

EDIT: So I just heard from a mate that Peter K just made a trip to melbourne to collect and deliver a De Vere 5108 to a fella in Canberra. I've tried numerous times to contact this guy to no avail unfortunately. This is just madness, thats like 5 5108s now!!!!

Just another bump!
I have emailed over 200 (and counting) labs, pre-press houses, universities and TAFEs across Australia and NZ for any equipment in general. Just starting to hear back from some of them now, fingers crossed Hoping to make it to the Box Hill markets in Melbourne this weekend but I have heard it is mostly junk equipment (at least darkroom-wise)

Can confirm this picture posted earlier is in fact not a De Vere 5108...

It is a ESECO 10x10 chassis with a 5108 Dichroic head, and I believe it is indeed motorised. I thought the whole thing looked a little too big, all the fittings and baseboard too, still can't see those handles!

With regard to the Box Hill flea market and darkroom stuff, you are mostly correct. That said, a couple of years ago there were 4 enlargers that were 4x5" from four vendors. Some years ago, maybe 4-5 years, there were 2 x 8x10" enlargers, which at the time surprised me; they both sold very quickly. I know as I had a stall, both were bought before the doors opened to the general public and exited the building before the doors opened.

Some people hire a table with no intention of selling anything, their sole purpose in hiring a table, is to be there before the doors open.

Sometimes there are various signs under tables, but up front, displaying a list of heavy stuff that is almost pointless dragging to a flea market. Look out for lists and don't be afraid to ask people who look like they may have some interesting darkroom stuff but not what you have. Although, I'm pretty sure you would do that anyway.

I'll be there on Sunday waiting for the doors to open. If you are there, perhaps we can meet up?

Mick.

Red is 157mm overall, but that takes into account the guides. These stick out approximately 5mm either side, so the rear part that you have marked is 147mm plus or minus a smidge.
Green is 100mm
Blue is 54mm right alongside the column, but the rest of it, where in fact you have marked, is 45mm.

Mick.

Sorry for the approximations, but I don't have a ladder in the darkroom and fitting one at the rear to enable the top measurements is a bit of a job.

This is my enlarger.

Thanks Mick, yes just after the widest measurement of column rear (ex guide rails) so not specifically the top

@Johnkpap No building just yet of course just design and configuring. It will all be modular with two adjustable internal walls that define the length of darkroom. They will have pivoting castors to make it larger or smaller when needed depending on other equipment. This way it can be easily put in a 40ft container if I so wanted.

Bugger, had a free De Vere 504 lined up but the seller just didn't want to wait any longer for me to come and pick it up when I could, such a shame. Another city person has taken advantage, this is starting to get really annoying Is there nothing for the regional folk?

You have to be very Quick these days.......As you know there is not a lot of Pro level darkroom gear for sale

Look at what safe lights and Bulk 35mm film loaders are selling for on EBAY.........at one time you could not give safe lights away!!!

Good luck with your search

John, please ready my blog post. Absolutely not. I will need to undergo brain surgery shortly and haven't been able to drive for the past year and won't be able to till another 6mo after the operation. So it is a wee bit more difficult to organise something quickly.

I think you've made great progress. Finding enlargers is a funny thing. When I actively are looking for something for my darkroom everything is 3000 miles away or, too expensive etc. I'm 62 and I've been assembling my set up since I was 14.
When I think I'm all set, up pops some equipment at a really good price, that I find I can't live without.
You can work on a water system until you find a truckload of stuff cheap.
Best Regards Mike

Hi Mike,

Sorry for the inactivity I have been very busy with work and studies but now semester is over I can speed up progress. I have designed a pretty basic isolated water/waste management system for the container. Just involves a insulated water tank (defunct rheem etc) pressure pump, r/o filters and continuous gas heater hooked up to a cylinder and the ventilation. These are located at the rear of the container just inside the doors and closed off from the rest of darkroom with the electronics and everything else. The doors will be modified with louvre vents and I can access it for refilling from mains or swapping gas. For waste, I will have a silver recovery unit plumbed to the sink to act as a sediment trap which will then be pumped into a waste water tank strapped to trolley in the back compartment. Every session I can roll it out and dump in a larger IBCs located away from the containers.

Hot water will seldom be used so a smaller gas cylinder is fine and the phototherm processor I have is self plumbed (distilled) and has a heater too anyway. I could probably get away without any heated water but its there for convenience and in case I get a different processor that requires plumbed hot water. Any feedback on this setup is appreciated, I am going meet a local who has some darkroom stuff tomorrow hopefully they have what I need. Should also note I am probably not going to bother with an 8x10 for now but have redesigned the layout to accept one at a later point.

Looks like the 8x10 enlarger market has changed since I got mine (for almost nothing). Out of curiosity I checked that in the USA, a new 8x10 enlarger may still be available from Omega. For fun I checked the "Locate" button for Australia but it came back blank.

$16,000 USD for a new enlarger chassis is actually a good price. The inflation adjusted original 1988 purchase price of my L1840 Durst chassis only (no lens or head) would be $36,896.90 in USD today.

Why not have your gas heater and bottles external? Be way safer and give you more space.
BTW If your intending on making this a commercial venture, you probably best to rethink a few things.

You are aware that is just the chasis right? God knows how much the head is, Omega is american-made although I have found several here already. Passed on all of them, just not a fan.

Hi Paul, this approach is standard practice for container modifications. It only takes amount 500mm depth and anything external of container envelope just makes it harder to transport. Having it all self-contained just makes more sense for what I want to do, when it has found a permanent home I will have it all external. While at some point in distant future it would be good to recoup some costs as a side business thing please elaborate via PM and we can discuss there.

Bests,
Caleb

Just secured the entire contents of a darkroom here which included a V35 w/ Heiland Splitgrade system, dichro and MG heads as well. Not a large format enlarger but will serve well for banging out lots of 35mm stuff quickly, great addition none-the-less. Most of the other stuff I will be donating to a darkroom club I am a part of. Also managed to find a RH Analyzer Pro but still searching for a nice 4x5, a fancy durst Multigraph would be nice but I would not be able to use the analyzer hmmm. Still looking!

I have a De Vere 504 (with MG500 head) bench model, and a 5108 floor-standing machine if you need measurements.
Thanks Tom, I have altered the design moving all the utilities (electricals, gas, water etc) externally and instead using the free space as storage or a spot for the larger format enlarger. This space is adjustable so dimensions aren't as critical and I no longer have to design for a specific enlarger, also allows me to have a floorstanding model if I so wish (just make the depth wider etc). In that case, are you able to provide total depth of the 5108 excluding the baseboard and handles (so just to the edge of baseboard platform not the baseboard itself)

Sorry if you this a bit confusiing TYA I have edited the thread title to reflect this.
