For socks I love the IceBreaker virgin wool.

Based in my success with IceBreaker gear for backpacking and ultrarunning, I recommend it head to toe! They make several weights of tops, even suitable for summer use, very nice because of no stink.

I just heard on TV it was the coldest December last year in Britain for over a hundred years and we're not used to extreme cold although it does get cold in Winter here it very rarely gets to -20 C generally it's a fairly temporate climate, but it was so cold in my kitchen in the mornings after the heating had been off all night that the microwave refused to work, I thought it was broken, but as soon as it warmed up it worked perfectly.

Indeed! Sounds gross if you haven't worn them but you can wear the same pair of socks for a week or two and no stink! I must get some other pieces of clothing from them, great stuff.
