Just a note. As usual, if a show is up for 8 weeks, I don't get there until week 7, but had an interesting view today.

My wife and I went to the Renoir landscape exhibition. This is the 2007 "blockbuster" show that is ending January 6th. As we entered the special gallery, I discovered they had set up a sort of lead-in for perspective -- vintage photographs of some of the areas Renoir painted.

Photos included a Woodburytype of the "Forest at Fountainbleu" by W. H. Harrison, ca. 1870; several albumen silver prints by Adolphe Braun, Eugène Atget, Eduord-Denis Baldus and Eugène Cuvelier, and a 1857 salt print by Baldus. Most except the Atget dated from the 1850s through 1870s or so. Quite remarkable, especially for some being 150 years old.

(Of course, the paintings were absolutely gorgeous too.)

We later wandered across the way to the Perelman Building. This museum addition is a newly opened major rehab of a 1920s Art Deco insurance company office that is interesting in its own right. One of the major exhibits currently displayed is work by Alfred Stieglitz, including a number of studies of the women in his life (whose relationships with him apparently overlapped quite a bit :rolleyes:smile:. There were a number of series taken on his property in the Lake George, NY area, and also some studies of new skyscrapers going up in NYC as viewed from his apartment there. Most were gelatin silver except a number of pictures of Georgia O'Keeffe were palladium. Some inspiring stuff, all from the museum's collection. The Stieglitz exhibit is running through February 17th.

On the second floor of the Perelman building, there was a closed door that indicated there are collections and portfolios of drawings, prints and photographs there -- "Staff Only" followed by "Open by Appointment." Given that they apparently have tens of thousands of photographs in the collection, some might find that interesting to pursue.

And that's the story ...
