I was wondering if Edward or Ansel ever mentioned HCB and his "Pictures of rocks and trees" comment.?
Thank You
Weston was never a photojournalist. HCB was. In fact, if I remember correctly what I have read, Edward Weston wasn't even allowed to venture down the road to Point Lobos during the war.

I've been looking around the interwebs for a good biography of Brett Weston. Then remembered this thread! Is there any published bio to recommend? Thanks!

If he had lived in South-East England, he would have been restricted a lot more.
But yeah, i believe they had a big Radar Installation there, and Battalion Engineers also had a big concern there as well.
If he only had been into 35mm and long lens.

amazon has something called "
A Restless Eye: A Biography of Photographer Brett Weston"
which the one reviewer claimed had objectivity problems. Most of what I know about him I've learned online. I think I'll borrow or buy a couple of his books and learn about him from his photos. At least as a start.

Open to recomendations!!

Thanks Merg. That was a good read. I've ordered Brett's book of Hawaii photos.

You can get a DVD featuring a Brett documentary and more than 800 of his images at

Thanks for the Richard Miller article, Merg. It raises a question - it says Brett used the Rollei then switched to the Mamiya. I had always heard the other way. Which is correct?

The Rollei SL-66 came after his Mamiyaflex TLR that he used in the early 60's. In about '68 he got the Rollei SL-66, and then later got a Mamiya RB-67. So, any confusion is because of two different Mamiya systems. He still continued to use the Rollei SL-66.

We all know that Brett Weston burnt many of his negatives, and kept a few. I have heard this number to be 12. I've also heard it to be higher. Kim, are you able to shed some light on this? And do we know which negatives were saved?

Kim, one of my favorite things is a matted and framed copy of "Pepper 1930" that I cut out of an Aperture calendar years ago. I've also got a big poster of one of Brett's dune pictures in my living room. For some reason, looking at these two and some of the Ansel Adams posters, always seems to calm me down.

Kim last visited September 13. His promotion was done and I guess he no longer is interested in us. Maybe he's just busy

I was hoping he'd answer my question...

Hello Andrew,

Thank you for your question. Brett destroyed most but his brother Cole was able to convince him to save a few. He hole punched these and wrote on them with sharpie "No Prints, BW"

The reason we have stopped posting to the forum is that we had been harassed by some members which left a foul taste in our mouth and without the desire to engage. Happy Holidays

That doesn't surprise me in the least. One of the sad realities of this forum.

This really is sad, Seems to reflect much of America these days.

Some people lost the ability to able to disagree and not be disagreeable. And some of those are unable to stay in the same room and be civil to anyone. Please stay with us. The rest of us are worth staying for.

Thank you for getting back to me. I'm glad Cole was able to convince him to save a few.
I'm sorry that happened to you. Sadly, there are a few here who make this a bad place to be sometimes. I know a few members being harassed by PM. Thankfully, the majority here are decent and hope that you will continue to contribute.

Unfortunate. Both.

I disagree completely, i have been on many forums. And this is actually the nicest one of all. I have been kicked off of two different photo related forums this year for asking "stupid questions" and "asking too many questions". Seriously, if a photo forum bans me for asking basic photography related questions that i cant learn on my own, such as "how do i select a contrast grade for a print based upon how dark or light the negative is" it is a sad statement on that forum.

But at the same time, i have seen many people on those forums DEMAND to be treated as a god simply because they pay a monthly fee to have an online portfolio somewhere online.

I'm very sorry for that. The vast majority of people here are not like that and (at least speaking for myself) think it's really great to have you post here.

Edward Weston has always been my main inspiration. A true artist.
